SCHOOL DISASTER CONTINGENCY FOR TYPHOON

A. Introduction
Disaster know no race, ethnicity or political boundaries. They may strike at any
time or place. During times of disaster, the risk to the most vulnerable groups in the
school are learners is high. Every region is confronted with challenges of mitigating
the effect, especially in disaster-prone areas.
Disasters disrupt the schooling pattern of children and the youth, and affect
the quality of education service in school communities. Classes can be suspended for
an uncertain period of time and special classes may be necessary to make up for the
lost time, extending the school year of children. These special classes are usually held
in emergency learning spaces or makeshift classrooms within the school grounds.

Rationale:

Some natural disasters can be predicted, giving schools enough warning to evacuate or
to take other safety precautions, but other can happen unexpectedly or go through rapid
changes that suddenly put a school in danger, like earthquake. The first step should take in
preparing for this types of emergencies to assess the natural disaster risk in the areas

Earthquake may be summarized in one simple mission statement - “We serve

to save and the department is committed to providing an effective and efficient response
in all emergency situations which threatens life, property and public
safety.”

OBJECTIVE:

1. To mitigate impact of earth-quake disaster in internal and external

awareness and preparedness.
2. To provide effective support to all concerned.
3. To keep co-ordination and co-operation with other line departments
or stake holders.
4. To create general awareness among the people about earthquake
hazards and safety measures.

What are its affects?

Serious disruption of life, probably arising with no warning, that causes or threatens
death or injury on a large scale and/or with destruction of property and disruption of
communication system.

Studies have shown that most people are injured by falling contents or by trying to
move to another location, such as running outside. Moving can be very difficult during strong
shaking, and the periphery buildings is the most dangerous place for falling building
components, especially in brick buildings. The safest action in most situations is to drop,
cover and hold on.
Students, faculty and administrators can prepare themselves for emergencies at
school in a number of ways, from conducting regular emergency drills and have the know-how
and appropriate mitigations as possible.
