    Circular Motion

    I. Try this Do-It-Yourself experiment at your home.

    Materials:

    • Smooth floor
    • Marble
    • Roll of masking tape

    Procedure: (Include photos/video of your experiment)

    1. Clear out a wide patch of floor.


    2. Place the marble inside the roll of tape.
    3. Grip the outside edge of the roll of tape with the fingers of one hand. Spin the tape
    in a circular motion on the floor, not lifting it off the ground. The marble should start
    going around in a circle.
    4. Now, lift the roll of tape and see how the marble travels.
    5. Repeat several times.

    Questions:

    1. What type of force does the tape apply on the marble?

    2. When you lift the tape up, in what path and direction does the marble travel? What
    do you think is the reason why?

    II. Is it possible for astronauts to experience artificial gravity in space? Explain.
