Airport Capacity Planning Lecture 1 week 2

Introduction to STAMP
Basics of systems:
- Considers relations and interactions among components
- Systems are viewed as hierarchy of levels
- Each level controls the relationships between components at the next lower level
- System behaviour(good/bad, expected/unexpected) arises from:
o Component properties
o Interrelations

Each controller enforces specific constraints, which together enforce the system level
constraints(safety, security, etc). they use various types of communication between them.
STAMP: Safety as a dynamic control problem. Events result from a lack of enforcement of
safety constraints in system design and operations. The goal is to control the behaviour of
the components and systems as a whole to ensure safety constraints are enforced in the
operating system. A system is always interacting, it is never isolated.
In a system, sensors are added to measure the performance and follow the process. This will
also prevent any unexpected surprises.
