Tutorial 3 – Transformer

1) A step-up transformer has a primary to secondary turn ratio of 1:15. Calculate the
primary voltage necessary to supply to a 240V load. If the load current is 3.0A,
determine the primary current.
[Ans: 45A]

2) A single phase transformer has a 40 primary turns and 520 secondary turns. The cross-
sectional of the core is 270 cm2. The primary winding is connected to 300V supply with
frequency, f = 50 Hz. Determine the value of the flux density in the core (b) voltage
induced in the secondary coil windings.
[Ans (a) 1.25T (b) 3.9kV]

3) A 10kVA, single-phase transformer has a turn ratio of 12:1 and it is supplied from a
2.4kV supply. Neglecting losses, determine (a) full load secondary current (b) the
minimum value of load resistance, which can be connected across the secondary
winding (c) primary current.
[Ans(a) I2= 50A (b) Z2 =4.0Ω, (c) I1= 4.167A]

4) A 60 Hz, 100-kVA, 2400/240-V transformer (considered to be ideal) is used as a step

down transformer from a transmission line to a distribution system.
a) Determine the turns ratio
b) What is the secondary load impedance that will cause the transformer to be fully
loaded, what is the corresponding primary current?
c) Find the value of the load impedance that is referred to the primary side of the
transformer.

[Ans(a)a= 10 (b)ZL= 0.576 Ω, Ii= 41.67A (c ) Z1= 57.6 Ω]

performed on a single phase, 50-kVA, 2400:240 V, 60 Hz distribution transformer

6) A 150-kVA, 2400/240V transformer has the following parameters referred to the

primary side; R e1  0.5  and X e1  1.5 . The shunt magnetizing impedance is very
large and can be neglected. At full load, the transformer delivers rated kVA at
0.85 lagging power factor and the secondary terminal voltage at full load is 240V.
