Finite Element Analysis (FEA) or Finite Element

Method (FEM) is a numerical method for solving a
system of governing equations over the domain of a
continuous physical system, which is discretized into
simple geometric shapes called finite elements.

5. Discretization

Modeling a body by dividing it into an equivalent

system of finite elements interconnected at a finite
number of points on each element called nodes.

 Discretization is also known as Meshing.

 Smaller element size means the given structure has

been divided into greater number of elements and
nodes, known as fine mesh.
 Larger element size means the given structure has
been divided into less number of elements and
nodes, known as coarse mesh.

Explanation:
Consider we have a rectangular beam of total length 50cm as
shown in Figure.(We will consider it only in one dimension i.e.
horizontal)

Coarse Mesh:
Greater element size, less number of elements and nodes.

10cm
Fine Mesh:
Smaller element size, greater number of elements and nodes.

6. Basic steps in FEA
14

- Domain Discretization
- Select Element Type (Shape and Approximation)
- Derive Element Equations (Variational and Energy Methods)
- Assemble Element Equations to Form Global System

[K]{U} = {F} Pre- Processing

[K] = Stiffness or Property Matrix
{U} = Nodal Displacement Vector
{F} = Nodal Force Vector

- Incorporate Boundary and Initial Conditions

- Solve Assembled System of Equations for Unknown Nodal
Solution
Displacements
- Secondary Unknowns of Stress and Strain Values
