option. I ask before playing any
videos; most of the time, at least one
person wants them. If students are
hard of hearing, it also helps them if
they can read along.
It was a very relaxed day that I was able to share with the students. I had the
opportunity to share some of my interests and passions with them. They were very
interested in learning survival skills and discussing the different aspects of the
videos we watched as a class. I was able to pause every now and again and explain
what they were doing in the video. Even though some students decided to make
commentary or small talk during the video, it was all relevant to survival. I shared
with them some stories from the show “Alone” and the different things the
contestants accomplished or suffered through.
I would definitely love to do something like this again in future classes. We plan on
doing some outdoor survival training in the spring when it is warm enough for us
to be outside.
I understand that any lesson must always be open to adjustment. There are several factors
that go into planning any lesson, time, learners' needs and interests, and outside factors. This
lesson was never intended to be, but I created it for the students. They had been promised a
break/reward for the work they had been doing and the project that would soon be introduced. I
will always be open to changing lesson plans if my students show different interests or needs.
