Students will listen and engage with living history.
Students will have the chance to learn
from retired veterans. They will be
able to listen to living history and have
numerous stories to engage with. This
is the perfect chance for the students
to learn from their community
members.

N/A There is no actual assessment for a

guest speaker. We could only look for
if they are paying attention and
potentially asking questions. Teacher
observation is key during class times
like this.

Notebooks
Instructional Methods: Selects, creates, and sequences learning experiences and performance
tasks by using a variety of instructional approaches, strategies, and technologies that make
learning accessible to all learners and support learners in reaching rigorous curriculum goals.
Teaching and Learning Sequence
Greet students as they enter the room (1-2 minutes).
Have them grab their notebooks and settle in (1-2
minutes).
Introduce the guest speakers (1-2 minutes).

Meeting students’ needs (differentiation,
extensions, modifications, accommodations)
Students are able to fidget if needed during the
extended class period. There is no punishment for
standing and listening to the veterans talk.
Students can have the teachers as their
pre-written questions.

The students do not need anything for
this activity. They are going to be
actively listening to the speakers and
need no distractions around them.
They have their notebooks because
they have written questions in
preparation for the guests.

Instructional Decisions / Reasoning
As the students enter the room, I greet
them and allow them to settle.
Sometimes they take a few moments
to talk with one another, or they
simply sit down and get ready for the
class period.
I always find it polite to introduce
someone new in the classroom. I did
this for Mr. Thelander, who was going
o be speaking with us that day. After
the introductions were complete, we
gave him the floor, and the rest of the
class was for him to speak.

I know some kids need to fidget
during extended periods of sitting. If
they need to do so during the guest
speakers' time, it is okay for them to
do so.
For those who are more on the quiet
or shy side, they can have the teachers
read their pre-written questions. We
have no issues engaging with the
speakers and asking follow-up
questions during the stories.
Reflection

13/13 students met the standard.

All of the students were engaged and respectful of the guest speakers. They were
not distracted by their phones or any other devices. The students were on the shy
side, but some managed to ask a few questions during the presentation. I am very
proud of this guest speaker interaction. I was able to organize this all on my own,
with no help from my mentor teacher or anyone else.

Standard 10 Collaboration 10(m):

As an educator, I strive to bring in speakers within the community sphere of influence to

enhance student learning. Bringing in different perspectives allows the students to learn in a
more worldly view and listen to someone another than their normal classroom teachers.

Standard 8 Instructional Strategies 8(d):

I can vary my role in the instructional process. When a guest speaker enters the classroom, I
shift my role to that of an audience member. I actively join the students at their desks and
participate as they would by asking questions and giving the speakers my full attention. I assist
in guiding the students to engage with the stories being told and asking follow-up questions to
keep the conversation going.
