Tutorial No.4

1. Figure Q1 shows a pin-joint structure with a load P acting at B. Member AB and CB are made of
elastic-perfectly plastic structural steel with the material properties of Young’s Modulus Es = 210
GPa and Yield Stress Ys = 240 MPa. Both members AB and CB have the same cross sectional area
of 100 mm2.
Determine the load P and displacement u where the yielding failure of the structure occurs.

2. In lecture note, example 4.1, add a member BD of the same material and cross section as member
AD and CD. Determine the loads P required to cause deflection u=2.00, 4.00, 4.481, and 8mm

3. The nonzero stress components relative to axes (x, y, z) are

 xx  90 MPA ,  yy  50 MPA ,  xy  6 MPA

Predict the yield point Y of the materials by;

(i) The maximum shear stress (Tresca) criterion,

(ii) The distortional energy density (von Mises) criterion.

4. A spherical pressure vessel of 4.6m internal diameter is used to contain an industrial gas at a
pressure p =0.3MPa. If the allowable yield strength of the material is 96.5MPa, estimate the
required wall thickness of the pressure vessel using the maximum shear stress criterion.
