What is TPACK?

Introduction
TPACK helps to break down what technology is appropriate for different levels of students
to be used. TPACK helps educators educate about technology, as well as how to

use the Technology.

Where did TPACK Originate?

TPACK originated in 2006 at Michigan State University. The TPACK framework was

introduced by Punya Mishra and Matthew J Koehler. The professional website was

developed by Matthew

J Koehler, Associate Professor of Educational Psychology and Educational Technology. The

website provides content from one of the two theorists who developed the TPACK

model.Punya Mishra, Professor

of Educational Psychology and Educational Technology, published an ongoing digital archive.

Mishra is one of the two theorists who developed the TPACK model.

Knowledge, and Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge.

Classroom Uses
TPACK is important to incorporate into the classroom because it helps get

students involved with different technology, as well as giving the teacher

different resources to use in the classroom. The use of the different components

can happen once the teacher has enough knowledge within each component. It

is important that teachers have this knowledge because they can effectively use

different approaches in their lessons, and teach children effectively how to use

technology.

Instructor’s Benefits
Instructors can benefit from using TPACK through examining and reflecting their practices and how technology can

be used in a classroom. TPACK allows teachers to teach and create learning in meaningful ways through

technology. This tech integration can be broken down to three knowledge areas: technology, pedagogy, and

content allowing teachers to work on their own philosophy around technology in their classroom.

Students can use different pieces of technology to help boost their

Technology to education. One example would be through different powerpoints or visuals

that can be seen on the board in front of them, being sure to make them
aesthetically pleasing to the eye, adding pictures and colors that sit nicely

Advocate TPACK/ together. Students can also learn through different games and websites,
however,

Student Benefits
these websites need to be age appropriate for the age of the student, understanding that different
ages will be lacking different technological skills that one would need for different websites and
games.

Additional Information on TPACK

● According to an article on EDTECH Classroom, TPACK helps guide students to receive a high quality
educational experience through technology. Transformation occurs when technology can be
related within teaching and learning. Three forms of knowledge areas included within TPACK are
known as Technological Knowledge, Pedagogical Knowledge, and Content Knowledge. These
knowledge areas are not viewed in isolation, the framework emphasizes on intersections of all
these knowledge areas. The center of all three knowledge areas are what creates TPACK, giving
teachers a combination of the knowledge areas technology, pedagogy, and content for an
innovative approach to teaching and learning. 4
