ACTIVITY 1
Care for the Environment: Recycling

Objectives:
1. To help reduce pollution caused by excess waste
2. To reduce the need for raw materials.
3. To convert waste into usable products
4. To diminish the plastic input into our natural resources

Apparatus and Materials:

2. Adhesives

Rationale:

Saving the environment is a critical path that every human should take. The environment is
the source of most of the raw materials that are used in the manufacture of different products.
However, as what is experienced today, people are not very good and keen on protecting the
environment. Climate change, greenhouse effect, melting of the permafrost and deaths of marine
animals due to plastic ingestion have been indicators that the ecosystem has been disrupted because
of excessive pollution. Unfortunately, it is necessary to take initiated measures to help protect the
environment.
Recycling is the process of collecting materials that have been otherwise thrown away. It is one way
of reducing the waste being discarded by turning them to materials that are deemed useful in the
household and in the community entirely. Also, recycling eliminates the need for the raw materials
that are taken from nature.
There are also other methods that help reduce waste. One trending way is shopping for basic
necessities without their packaging. For example, when you shop for your shampoo, you bring your
own container and fill it up with the shampoo that you need. It is both environment-friendly and cost-
saving; because you did not buy the packaging, ergo, you do not have to pay for the packaging,

therefore, you also not have accumulated waste. Unfortunately, this type of shopping for necessities,
is still not available in small provinces such as ours.

Procedures:
1. From the recyclable materials, make innovations that can be useful and utilized.
2. Make innovations that may be used. Please AVOID making innovations that are for display (e.g.
pots, night lights and other crafts that are only for aesthetic and display).
3. Prepare for a presentation of your innovation

Questions for Critical Thinking:

1. Why did you choose the innovation that you have made? What are its qualities that would
make it help the environment? (10 points)

2. What biogeochemical cycle or chemical reaction in the environment did your innovation
help? (5 points)
