2.0 Using Supplied Cutter Guides

Custom cases Rigid plastic products Wh

Making correct use of files provided by your packaging supplier

Damage Sample cases

Design Search
Before creating your artwork files, you should request a cutter guide / die line (effectively your packaging template) from your packaging
supplier. But it is important that you know how toDistributors
use this correctly. Sheet material

Efficiency
2.1: Orientation (inside / outside view) Single Source

Emails SPA
When creating artwork, your packaging supplier will send you a file to use a guide for positioning the various elements of your artwork
layout. This is referred to as a “Cutter guide” or “die line”.
Environment Specialist corrugated

This file, usually provided by GWP Packaging or your packaging supplier as an AI (Illustrator)
ESD Foam or PDF, will nearly always show the inside view.
SSI Schaefer
This is because it is also used for creating tooling which creases as well as cuts.

Exclusives Stock Reduction

It is crucial that you “flip” (i.e. mirror) the supplied file to ensure you are laying up the artwork on the outside view of the box.

Foam Unique Benefits

If you are creating the artwork for the inside of the box (e.g. for ecommerce packaging) then you will not need to flip the design. If you are
having print on both the inside and outside views, you will need to create 2 separate artwork files.
Foam Packaging Waterproof cases
If in doubt about whether you are using the inside or outside view, please contact your GWP adviser who will be happy to help.
Fulfilment Wesbsite

Why GWP

2.2: Scaling

Sometimes, your packaging will be so large that certain software will not be able to process the cutter guides (for example large transit
packaging, pallet boxes, larger POS etc.)

In this scenario, it is possible to reduce the size of the layout, for example to 50%. If doing this, ensure you inform your supplier you have
done this, and make sure all placed imagery will be at least 300 dpi when scaled up.

2.3: Layers Damage Sample cases

Design Search
Whenever possible, please save your artwork on a separate layer to the cutter guides, otherwise it can become difficult to remove this for
printing.
Distributors Sheet material

Besides this, in order to ensure your custom packaging cuts and prints correctly, it is very important that the unique structural die line is

included, unmodified, as part of the print file.

Emails SPA
Keeping the cutter guide on a separate layer not only ensures you do not accidentally modify it, but can also allow you to toggle the visibility
(i.e. changing the guides to a different colour if they are not visible against blocks of colours).
Environment Specialist corrugated

2.4: Safe Margins ESD Foam SSI Schaefer

Exclusives Stock Reduction

Due to the accuracy of registration and potential movement during printing and cutting processes, any elements which do not “Bleed” (see
below) should be placed at least 5mm away from the cut or crease lines.
Foam Unique Benefits

2.5: Adding Bleeds Foam Packaging Waterproof cases

Fulfilment Wesbsite
Bleed is a printing term that refers to printing that goes beyond the edge of a cut. Effectively, the bleed is the area to be trimmed off. For
packaging and POS displays, bleeding is also required internally for each panel over crease lines. Artwork including background images and
Why GWP
fills of solid colour which are intended to extend to the edge of the panel must be extended beyond the cutter/crease line to give a bleed (see
diagram below)

Failing to provide bleed in your artwork would result in finished pieces showing a thin area of white or brown unprinted board on the edge.
GWP Recommend you include a bleed of 5mm on your artwork files.

How to ensure vibrant, bold print on your packaging

Damage Sample cases

Design Search
Whether you are looking to match brand colours, achieve a striking and impactful appearance in store, or to simply lift a standard transit
carton, correct use of colour plays an important role in the creation of your packaging artwork.
Distributors Sheet material

3.1: Process vs Spot Colours Efficiency Single Source

Emails SPA
Process Colours are referred to as CMYK, Cyan (C), Magenta (M), Yellow (Y) and Black (K), four colour process or even just process. These
different colours are used to reproduce a colour image. Combined together in varying proportions CMYK is able to produce the full colour

Pantone colours are often specified for printing as a ‘spot colour’, a specific colour printed using an ink made exclusively and typically for jobs
which require no full colour imagery like colour matching for corporate branding to ensure consistent colour reproduction.
Exclusives Stock Reduction

Foam Unique Benefits

Foam Packaging Waterproof cases

Fulfilment Wesbsite

Why GWP

3.2: Choosing colours

Pantone spot colours that are intended to be four colour process and litho printed should be converted to CMYK using the Pantone+ Colour
Bridge® library. This is usually not necessary for digital printing as our digital presses create a colour simulation for spot colours.
Packaging that is to be printed using the flexographic method does however support Pantones and other spot colours, alongside CMYK.

If your job is full colour, please ensure that you work entirely in CMYK. If your program does not support CMYK or Pantone, we will need to
convert your colours before printing.

3.3: RGB Conversion

The RGB colour model is where images / graphics are made up of Red (R), Green (G) and Blue (B). This is used for images which are intended
to be viewed on screen, NOT printed.

As such, please convert all RGB colours to CMYK to avoid unexpected colour shifting when printed.

3.4: Black ink saturation Damage Sample cases

Design Search
It is common to see black elements created using 100% C 100% M, 100% Y and 100% K. This means there is an ink coverage of 100%, which
can cause issues with drying, ink smearing, smudging, poor definition and even distortion of the substrate (i.e. corrugated cardboard).
Distributors Sheet material

Conversely, using a black built using 0% C, 0% M, 0% Y and 100%K can sometimes result in a washed out, dark grey appearance rather than

a dark black.

Emails SPA
Therefore, if your artwork includes black, we recommend it’s created as a “rich” black with 30% C, 30% M, 30% Y and 100% K. Although it is
not necessary, many printers recommend including a 0.5pt stroke of 100% K to avoid print overspray.

Why GWP

3.5: Monitor colours

Please bear in mind that monitors and desktop printers do not produce accurate representations of the press printed colour.

3.6: Kraft vs White material

Please also note that printing onto Kraft (i.e. brown) cardboard can alter the appearance of your colours (due to both the background colour
but also the difference in contrast) when compared with printing onto white material.

3.7: Spot laminate / varnish areas

Matte or gloss varnishes should be indicated on a separate layer in your artwork, which must be clearly labelled. Indicate the shapes / areas
to be coated, and this will be treated as printing an additional spot colour.

Distributors Sheet material

4.1: Orientation Efficiency Single Source

Emails SPA
It can be difficult to visualise how elements will be displayed on different panels when the packaging is folded up / assembled.
Environment Specialist corrugated
It can be a useful exercise to print out a copy of the cutter guide, and fold as though assembling it. This will then allow you to ensure that

ESD Foam SSI Schaefer

4.2: Scaling correctly Exclusives Stock Reduction

When scaling elements within your artwork software, it is also possible to scale them correctly.

Simply dragging the corners to the correct size can distort the element, making it seem stretched or squashed. This can be avoided by

5.0 Correct Use of Imagery & Logos

Ensure correct branding and print Damage

quality Sample cases

Design Search
Graphics and imagery are one of the easiest areas to get wrong when setting artwork. But following the below points should help.

Distributors Sheet material

5.1: Vectors vs rasters / bitmaps
Efficiency Single Source

In simple terms, raster files (also referred to as bitmaps)

Emails are images made up from pixels
SPA(tiny dots). These are used for full colour graphics
and photographs due to the level of detail that can be achieved. Common formats include .jpeg, .tiff and .png.
Environment Specialist corrugated
Vectors on the other hand, are effectively mathematical formulae, which store the lines, shapes and colours that make up an image. These
are often saved as .ai, .eps and .pdf files, and are also used for fonts.
ESD Foam SSI Schaefer

5.2: Use of Vectors Exclusives Stock Reduction

Foam Unique Benefits

Where possible, vectors should be used for logos, icons and graphics.

Foam Packaging Waterproof cases

This will produce a much crisper finish on the print, and also allows them to be scaled to any size without a loss in quality.

Fulfilment Wesbsite
5.3: Use of raster files
Why GWP

All images included in your artwork file should be supplied at least 300dpi in the correct colour mode at the placed size. This includes any
scanned documents, although we advise against these due to their generally poor quality.

For best results, all artwork and images should be a minimum of 300dpi at finished print size and embedded within the artwork. As a rule of
thumb, if you are unsure about the resolution of your image zoom in to 300% and, if you can see pixels, it is likely you will see them when the
artwork is printed too.

If images are at resolution of 150dpi or lower at 100% scale this can result in a loss of sharpness and “pixelated” look (straight lines will have
a “staircase” effect).

Suitable formats for raster images include jpeg and tiff.

8.0 Exporting and Submitting Your Files

Custom cases Rigid plastic products Wh

The correct process for generatingDamage

and sending print ready files
Sample cases

Design Search
The final step in the creation of your artwork is to correctly export (or package) your artwork, and send t your packaging supplier.

Distributors Sheet material

8.1: Exporting as a PDF
Efficiency Single Source

For the best results, artwork should be supplied as a press ready PDF.
Emails SPA

> All PDFs should be set to high resolution to be press ready

Environment Specialist corrugated
> All PDFs must include 5mm bleed
> All fonts should be outlined before exporting, or Foam
ESD at least must be embedded within
SSIAdobe Acrobat: the ‘File > Properties > Fonts’ tab
Schaefer
shows a full list of fonts used in the document. Every font should show as embedded or an embedded subset.
Exclusives Stock Reduction
If printing by litho or digital, any process colours are converted to CMYK prior to creating a PDF. This is not necessary for flexographic
printing. Converting spot colours to CMYK after creating a PDF may produce unexpected results (especially when transparent effects are

involved)

Using the PDF/X-3 standard is recommended.

8.2: Sending Original Artwork Files Why GWP

InDesign and QuarkXPress allow the packaging of artwork which collects the artwork and all images and fonts in a convenient folder.
InDesign does this via the Package command and Quark via the Collect for Output command.

> All placed images and used fonts must be included along with the artwork file.
> It is good working practice to include (at least) a low resolution PDF along with any original artwork to check against.
> If supplying original artwork all placed images (TIFF, EPS, JPEG) must be included within a clearly marked folder (e.g. Images or Links)
within the main artwork folder.

8.3: Sending artwork (we transfer / email)

Most packaging suppliers and printers will accept files electronically. Files up to 10mb can usually be sent via email

For larger files up to 20GB in size, you can use an FTP service, or use an online tool such as We Transfer or Dropbox (please note the transfer
completion time depends on the speed of your internet connection and the file size).

Alternatively you can send file(s) on a memory stick or CD.
