LESSON 6.1: Quadrilaterals and Properties of Parallelograms

 Terminologies
- Quad – 4
- Kite – quadrilateral that has 2 pairs adjacent congruent angles.
- Trapezoid – quadrilateral that has 1 pair parallel sides.
- Isosceles Trapezoid – quadrilateral that has congruent non-parallel sides.
- Parallelogram – quadrilateral that has 2 pairs of parallel sides.
- Rhombus – parallelogram that has 4 congruent sides and opposite angles are congruent.
- Rectangle – parallelogram that has 4 right angles.
- Square – has all characteristics of a rhombus and rectangle.
- Trapezium – has no congruent sides.
- 360 degrees – sum of the angles in a quadrilateral.

MUST KNOW: You can make a quadrilateral using the consecutive vertices.

 Properties of a Parallelogram A D
- Opposite sides are parallel
- Opposite sides are congruent
E
- Opposite angles are congruent
- Consecutive angles is supplementary
(SUPPLEMENTARY - measures 180 degrees)
- Diagonals bisect each other. B C
- Diagonal divides a parallelogram into two congruent triangles.

COMMON TECHNIQUES IN SOLVING PARALLELOGRAMS:

- Combining similar terms (Addition Property of Equality

Ex: 3x + 7 = 5x + 3
3x – 5x = 3 – 7
-2x = -4

- Division Property of Equality

−2 x −4
Ex: =
−2 −2
x=2
- Substitution (once x is gotten)
Ex: 3x + 7
3(2) + 7
13

LESSON 6.2: Special Parallelograms

 Terminologies
- Rectangle – a parallelogram with a right angle
- Rhombus – a parallelogram that has a pair of consecutive congruent sides
- Square – a parallelogram (rectangle and rhombus) that has 4 right angles and 4 congruent
sides.

 Properties of a Rectangle
- All properties of a parallelogram (6)
- Has 4 right angles
- Diagonals are congruent.
 Properties of a Rhombus
- Properties inherited from the parallelogram.
- Four congruent sides
- Diagonals are perpendicular (straight line at an angle of 90 degrees)
- Each diagonal bisects the angles of the rhombus.

 Properties of a Square
- All properties of parallelogram
- All properties of a rectangle
- All properties of a Rhombus

3x – 5x = 3 – 7
-2x = -4

- Division Property of Equality

−2 x −4
Ex: =
−2 −2
x=2

- Substitution (once x is gotten)

Ex: 3x + 7
3(2) + 7

- Distributive Property
Ex: 3 (x +5)
3x + 15

- Finding LCD – not much used (if given is fraction)

x−2 2 x+3
Ex: +
2 6
x−2 2 x+3
6( 2 + 6 )
