Question numbers 1 to 20 are very short answer questions, carrying 1 mark each. Question numbers 21
to 27 are short answer questions, carrying 2 marks each. Question numbers 28 to 34 are short answer
questions, carrying 3 marks each. Question numbers 35 to 37 are long answer questions, carrying 5
marks each.
Use of calculators is not permitted. However you may use Log Tables, if necessary.

10µ F are available but they can withstand only 50 V. Design a combination which can yield the desired result

battery is disconnected after charging and capacitor is isolated.

28. What is self Inductance? A wire of fixed length is wound on a solenoid of length ‘ℓ’ and radius 'r'. Its self
inductance is found to be L. Now if same wire is wound on a solenoid of length ℓ/2 and radius r/2, then what would be
its self inductance?

29. Draw the magnetic field lines distinguishing between diamagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic materials. Give a
simple explanation to account for the difference in the magnetic behavior of these materials.
30. Three circuits, each consisting of a switch ‘S’ and two capacitors, are initially charged, as shown in the figure. After
the switch has been closed, in which circuit will the charge on the left-hand capacitor (i) increase, (ii) decrease and (iii)
remain same ? Give reasons.

31. What is eddy current .How do you reduce it. Write three applications of eddy current.
32. (a) Define SI unit of current in terms of the force between two parallel current carrying conductors.
(b) Two long straight parallel conductors carrying steady currents I a and Ib along the same direction are separated by a
distance d. How does one explain the force of attraction between them? If a third conductor carrying a current Ic in the
opposite direction is placed just in the middle of these conductors, find the resultant force acting on the third conductor.
33. Derive the expression for average power consumed in one cycle in LCR circuit.
34. An ac source of 220 V is applied across a series combination of R = 40 ohm and an inductor L =4 H and capacitance
C= 100 μF Calculate:
i) What is resonance frequency of the circuit.?
ii) The impedance of the circuit. & The rms current in the circuit?
(iii)Determine the r.m.s potential drop across L.

35. Explain Biot-Savart Law. What are its similarities with Coulomb’s law in Electrostatics for a current carrying
conductor. 3
Two circular coils X and Y having equal number of turns and carry equal currents in the same sense and subtend same
solid angle at point O. If the smaller coil X is midway between O and Y, then if we represent the magnetic induction due
to bigger coil Y at O as and due to smaller coil X at O as BX then find B x //BY 2

36. Define potential gradient in potentiometer .What you understand by sensitivity and how can it be improved . 2
(b) If the null point cannot be obtained at any point on potentiometer wire, What could be the two possible causes?

(c) The figure shows a meter-bridge circuit, with AB = 100 cm, X =


120 and R = 180, and the jockey J in the position of balance. If R is
now made 80 through what distance will J have to be moved to
obtain balance? 2

37. (a)What is an equi-potential surface, write three properties of such surfaces ? Draw equipotentials for an electric field
in Z direction that increases with increase in Z coordinate. 3
(b) Calculate the amount of work done in turning an electric dipole of dipole moment 2 x 10-8 cm from its position of its
unstable equilibrium to position of stable equilibrium in a uniform electric field of intensity 103 N/C. 2

(a)State gauss law in electrostatics. Using Gauss law derive an expression for electric field due to uniformly charged
infinite long wire . 3

(b) Electric field in the given figure is directed along + X direction and given by
Ex = Ax + B, where E is in NC-1 and A = 2 and B = 3 in SI units. x is in meter.
Calculate the electric flux through the cube and net charge enclosed within the
cube. The side of the cube is 10cm. 2
