• Students should be able to explain on how to apply strategic

leadership within their own organizational context.
Driving Strategic Change
MM Blended
Learning

• Most often, contemporary thought leaders make a compelling

case for an increasingly inclusive approach to change.
• It is assumed that driving strategic change should involve
stakeholders, NOT just in planning the change, but also in
DESIGINING the very change itself.
• TWO important decision that any leaders need to decide are:
• Whether to provide DIRECTION → engaging stakeholders in a largely
one-way process that defines the strategy and change as determined
by the individual leader
• Or, by creating PARTICIPATION →by defining processes that involve
the contributions of others in what a given change should look like and
how it should be managed.
Identifying the ‘Right’ Approach

Learning

• The key to becoming more effective at driving change is by

selecting an approach that best suited to the situation.
• This can be performed by asking FIVE simple questions that
provide cues to the most appropriate approach in a given
situation:
• What needs to be accomplished?
• How influential are stakeholders, and how much are they needed?
• What are the available means of motivating others?
• To what degree does complexity play a role, and how?
• What role does the sustainability play in achieving the desired results?
• Driving change can be a critical and massive undertaking.
These 5 questions can show some of the issues that should be
considered when embarking on the journey to execute strategy.
The Role of the Four Types of Leadership Style
MM Blended
Learning

• In practice, the four types of strategic leadership should be

considered points of emphasis and not mutually exclusive.
• Many leaders integrate one or more types as it deemed to be
necessary according to the condition and situation.
• In practice, strategy formation and strategy execution are highly
interdependent. It is rarely possible to define strategy in
absence of considering what execution will require.
The Role of the Four Types of Leadership Style

• Likewise, the four types of strategic leadership invariably

overlap, intersect and reinforce each other when applied to the
messy nature of real life. It is the leaders’ challenge to
reconcile and integrate them in a meaningful way, which
involves reading the situation and context for cues, but it is
also a matter of personal discretion.
• Many of strategic leaders that the author observes demonstrate
a type of personal integrity that reflects a strong and clear
sense of themselves. They know who they are, and they show
up that way consistently. They adapt in ways that make sense
to the situation, but they don’t do things that undermine their
own credibility.
