Note that each of these steps continues even though the counselor and the client moves
to the next step. For example, after building a relationship, the counselor moves to Step 2 which
involves assessing the problem encountered by the client. In the meantime, the counselor
continues to strengthen the relationship that has been built. In other words, Step 1 or the building
of a relationship does not stop but is ongoing until Step 5 which involves termination or perhaps
the client referred to for further action.

1. PSYCHOANALYTIC THERAPHY
Approach developed by Sigmund Freud
Psychoanalysis is based on Freud’s explanation that human beings are basically
determined by psychic energy and early experiences. These unconscious energy
and experiences drive people’s behavior in the form of unconscious motives and
conflicts
The goal of the therapist is to help the client become conscious of this energy and
early experiences and thereby become empowered and harness both positively.
3. PERSON-CENTERED THERAPY
Originated from Carl Rogers
Non-directive and focused on the client’s self-discovery rather than input
The emphasis is on the person and his potentials while the problem comes
secondary only
5. BEHAVIORAL THERAPY
This approach targets overt behavior by specifying treatment goals and making
developing specific treatment plans
6. RATIONAL-EMOTIVE THERAPY
Developed by Albert Ellis (1913-2007)
A form of cognitively-oriented behavior therapy and is based on the assumptions
that human beings are being born with a potential for both rational and irrational
thinking.
7. REALITY THERAPY
Founded by William Glasser (1925-2013)
Focuses on the client’s present circumstances and highlights his/her strengths that can
be used to target realistic changes in behavior and thus achieve success.
