Description of professional development activity Timeframe Connection to your stated objective
completed
1. Summer camp counselor Summer of 2020 I worked with kids in the COPE and climbing area to overcome
challenges. Although each activity is voluntary, some scouts need
extra support to get them through especially on activities such as
the high ropes course or the zipline. Throughout each week, I talked
to scouts and formed relationships with them during meals or while
they were waiting in line for various activities. I also stayed in
touch with a lot of my fellow staffers who are younger than me and
still in high school. I talk to them about how school is going and
sometimes help them with their homework.
2. Summer Camp COPE/Climbing Summer of 2022 I worked with a different group of 11-17 year olds every week,
instructor working on climbing skills. Everything we do at COPE is
‘challenge by choice,’ meaning that nothing is forced, although
some kids need more support than others to help them overcome
their fears. A lot of this job involves forming relationships with the
scouts and making sure all safety equipment was being used
properly.
3. Summer Camp Climbing Director Summer of 2023 This summer, I will be the Director of the climbing area at the same
camp I worked at last year. Much of the day-to-day job description
will be the same as the above job, however I will be going through
training to be the go-to person for questions. I will also be in charge
of training the other instructors in the climbing area to ensure that
we all know the safety measures to be taken in the area.
4. Math Lab Tutor 2022-present I work as a math tutor for Butler’s Math department. I do my best to
help students who are in a variety of math classes here at Butler that
come in for help. This work helps me to refresh my math skills for
lower level math courses I have not taken for several years as well
as strengthening my teaching skills as I have to explain math topics
to students who did not understand them in class.
5. Scouts 2017-present I work a lot with the younger scouts in my troop when I am home to
get through their requirements and ranks of scouts. As the first
eagle scout in my troop and the oldest, I am a role model to many
of them. It makes me more self aware of what I say and do which I
will have to do as a teacher.
