Name: Carleigh Olive Major: Middle/Secondary Education (Specialization in Social Studies) and History; Minor:
Diverse Learners
WHY: I am very passionate about educating others and the importance of learning history. I want to help students learn
how to think critically about themselves, the world, and what they want their place to be in this world. Additionally, I am
extremely passionate about accessibility, mental health, and creating safe spaces for students. I believe education is one
of the most liberating and joyful forces in the world, and I intend to promote that each day.
What: through my teaching, I want my students to acquire critical thinking and analysis skills. These skills are essential to
every aspect of their lives and will help them be successful no matter what they choose to do with their lives. I want my
students to be able to aptly articulate their opinions, which these skills will help them with. Along the same lines, I want my
students to recognize and understand the value of multiple perspectives and the impact bias has on those perspectives. I
want students to know that making mistakes is perfectly fine; they are simply part of the learning process and an
opportunity to learn something new and gain a new perspective. Finally, I want students to know that they can always
come to me when they are in need and that my classroom is a place where they can authentically be themselves.
How: I will accomplish this by establishing a safe, positive, and accessible classroom environment where everyone
recognizes that there are high, but achievable, expectations. To do this, I must establish an accepting environment where
mistakes are encouraged and students can authentically be themselves. I must also incorporate culturally responsive
instruction into my lessons daily. This will be done through incorporating social-emotional learning (SEL) into my weekly
routines and procedures, such as welcoming students into the classroom, having check-ins with students, and asking
about their lives. I will help students develop critical thinking and analytical skills by creating student-centered lessons that
require students to reconcile with complex topics and engage with materials in similar ways historians do.
