Individualized Professional Development Plan

WHY:

I am pursuing this degree because I have always had such incredible educators as a student. I want to be the type of teacher that not

only helps grow my students academically, but socially and emotionally as well. I want our conversations to not only revolve around the

content and the standards, but the real world and issues that my students are actively facing. I want to be the educator who my students feel

like they grow in every facet of their lives, not only the small portion that directly correlates with education. There are so many important

lessons that are in literature that it turns into an interdisciplinary area of study and does not simply focus on reading and writing. I want my

students to see this and be the incredible educator that I had as a student for my future students.

What:

I have an end goal of teaching middle/secondary education with an English degree. I want to work in an environment in which

lessons can be centered around discussion and conversations rather than strict structured plans and lectures. I want to structure my class in

which I learn just as much as they do. To do this, a relationship between instructor and student is needed. I hope to form healthy

relationships with students and make them feel safe and supported in my classroom, this way they feel as if they can share what is on their

mind. I want to implement Social Emotional Learning and culturally responsive teaching into my classroom to do this. Students will feel safe

and comfortable in my classroom, and this can occur both when they share and contribute ideas to the lesson, but also if they share and

contribute ideas about their mental health. My classroom will be an open space for all students to express what they need to succeed.

How:

I will be developing the way in which I can cultivate this environment in my classroom and learn how to create relationships with

students. I will become the truest version of myself; therefore, I can show students who I truly am and gain their trust by being honest. I plan

on continuing to analyze different theories regarding learning to best accommodate my students in whatever stage they are in. By pushing

myself out of my comfort zone, I can be better prepared for when a day in my classroom does not go to plan.
