AoPS Academy Website and Textbook Instructions

Welcome to the AoPS Academy class Honors Math 7B! This document contains information about how
to use the AoPS Academy website, as well as important information about your textbooks.

AoPS Academy Website

Students log in to the AoPS Academy website with the username and password parents provided when
enrolling in the course. If you do not know your username or password, ask your parents. If they do not
know your username or password, they should visit the AoPS Academy website, click the Log In/Join
link in the upper right corner of the site (they may have to log out first), and then click “Forgot your
password or username?”
Once you log in to the website, you can find the homepage of this course on the bottom of ”My
Academy” page. Some key features of the homepage are listed below:
• The Overview tab contains a syllabus for the course. Please read the “Course Introduction”
document on the Overview tab.
• Each week, we will publish Class Notes on the Overview tab. The Class Notes provide an outline
and suggestions for key problems to study if you missed class.
• The Homework tab contains the homework for the course.
• The Report tab shows your performance on homework and exams.
• The Overview tab contains a recording of the most recent class session. Each recording will be
available for 7 days after the class date.

Textbooks
The course homepage includes suggested readings for each week. If you read the suggested material
before class, you’ll be much better prepared for class. You are required to have the textbook available to
you during the time your class meets.

Class 1 Extensions
The problems below are listed roughly in order of difficulty. The earlier problems are close to the level of
the class discussion, while the later problems are challenging extensions of the material. You may work
on whichever problems you choose, and are encouraged to collaborate with other students. You are also
welcome to ask the teacher for help.
1. Calculate each quantity.
√ √
(a) −16 + −25
√ √
(b) −16 · −25
2. Calculate each quantity.
(a) 4 − 6i, the conjugate of 4 − 6i
(b) (4 − 6i) + (4 − 6i)
(c) (4 − 6i)(4 − 6i)
3. Find real numbers a and b so that

(4 − 7i) + (a + bi) = 3 − 2i.

4. Calculate the product.

(x + 5i)(x − 5i)

5. Solve for x.
x2 + 9 = 0

6. Calculate each quantity.

(a) (4 + 3i)(4 − 3i)
p

(b) (6 + 8i)(6 − 8i)

p

(c) (12 + 5i)(12 − 5i)

p

7. Calculate the sum.

i0 + i1 + i2 + i3 + i4 + · · · + i2021

8. Suppose a + bi and c + di are complex numbers with b , 0.

(a) Calculate (a + bi) + (c + di) and (a + bi)(c + di).
(b) Show that if both the sum and product are real numbers, then either the complex numbers are
real numbers or conjugates.
9. Write the expression

7+i
2−i

in the form a + bi, where a and b are real numbers.
