WHAT I NEED TO KNOW?
This lesson was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you understand the
Competitive Ballroom dancing. In this lesson, you should employ your skills and knowledge in
understanding the competitive ballroom dancing .

After going this lesson on materials about song ballroom dancing, the learner are expected to :

1. Share their own competition experiences.


2. Familiarize the different competitive ballroom dance.
3. enumerate tips, advises and things to do before, during and after competition

3.LESSON PROPER
INSTRUCTION

1. The teacher will ask the student to think for a situation that you have experienced any of their
competition moments.
2. The teacher will introduce the topic “Competitive Ballroom Dance”.
3. The teacher will give the learners the elements of the competition and different recreational ballroom
dance.
4. Present some familiar ballroom dances.
5. Ask them the following:
a. Have you ever tried to join in a competitions?
b. What are your expectation and experience joining it?
c. What are the things we should do before and after competing?
d. What advice/s you can give to others who are afraid to join different competitions?

PRACTICE
The students will give some tips, advises or things to do that you have experienced before, during and
after your competition.

COMPETITIVE BALLROOM DANCE

 In spite of its historical image as a pastime for the privileged; formal competitions, sometimes
referred to as DANCE SPORTS, often allow participation by less advances dancers at various
proficiency levels. Ballroom dance competitions take place worldwide at different levels.

Elements of Competition
 Criteria - Connection, Frame, Posture, Speed, Timing, Proper body alignment, Proper usage of
weight/ankles/feet, and Grooming.
 Judging in a performance-oriented sport is inevitably subjective in nature, and controversy and
complaints by competitors over judging placements are not uncommon.
 The scorekeepers called SCRUTINEERS will tally the total number recalls accumulated through each
round until the finals, when the skating system is used to place each couple by originals typically 1-
6, though the number of couple in the final can vary.

Dances
 In one common usage “ ballroom dance” refers to the ten dances of International Standards and
International Latin, though the term is also often used interchangeably with the Five International
Standards dances.
 Other dances sometimes placed under the umbrella “ ballroom dance” includes Nightclub Dances
such as Lindy Hop, West Coast swing, Nightclub two Step, Hustle, Salsa, and Merengue.
 In Europe, Latin Swing dances include Argentine Tango, Mambo, Lindy Hop, Swing boogie
(sometimes also know as Nostalgic Boogie), and Disco Fox.
 Standard/Smooth dances are normally danced to Western music (often from the mid-twentieth
century), and couples dance counter-clockwise around a
rectangular floor following the line dance.
 In competitions, competitors are costumed as would be
appropriate for w white tie affair, with full gowns for the
ladies and bow tie and tail coats for the men; though in
American Smooth it is now conventional for the men to
abandon the tailsuit in the favor of shorter tuxedos,
vests, and other creative outfits.

 Recreational dance refers to any form of dancing that is done primarily for its social,
educational or health benefits; it includes social dance and amateur dance instruction and
performance.
 People all over the world enjoy the social and competitive nature of ballroom dancing.
Ballroom dancers are partner dances enjoyed socially and competitively worldwide. The following
12 ballroom dance are popular on the dance floors, on stage, in film, and on television:

1. Cha Cha - The Cha Cha is a lively, flirtatious ballroom dance full of passion and energy. The classic “
Cuban motion” gives the Cha Cha its unique style. Partners work together to synchronize each
movement in perfect alignment.

2. Foxtrot - is a ballroom dance that is lots of fun and simple to learn and an excellent dance for
beginners. The Foxtrot is a smooth dance in which dancers make long, flowing movements across the
floor.

3. Jive- is a ballroom dance style that originated in the United States from African -Americans. It is a
lively form of swing dance, and a variation of the Jitterbug.

4. Lindy Hop- is the ballroom dance considered to be the father of all swing dances. It is known for its
unique, athletic style, and often contains aerial jumps, twists and flips.

5. Mambo- is one of the most sensual and emotional Latin American ballroom dances. Swaying hip
movements, facial expression, arm movements and hold all add to the sensuality of the dance.

6. Paso Doble- is one of the liveliest ballroom dances, originating in southern France. It is modeled after
the sound, drama, and movement of the Spanish bullfight.

7. Quickstep - is a quick version of the Foxtrot. It is a ballroom dance comprised of extremely quick
stepping, syncopated feet rhythms, and turns of quick steps. The quicksteps is exciting to watch, but
among the most difficult of all ballroom dance.

8. Rumba- is considered by many to be the most romantic and sensual of all Latin ballroom dances. It is
often referred to as the “Grandfather of the Latin dances”.

9. Samba- possibly the most popular of all Brazilian ballroom dance, the Samba is popular with young
people as well as older generations. The Samba can be performed solo or with partner.

10. Tango- is one of the most fascinating of all ballroom dance. This is sensual ballroom dance
originated in South America in the early twentieth century.

11. Viennese Waltz- IS a quick rotating ballroom dance with a subtle rise and fall. It is considered by
most to be one of the most difficult dances to learn. The simple and elegant rotational movement
characterizes the Viennese waltz.

12. Waltz- is one of the smoothest ballroom dance. It is a progressive dance marked by long, flowing
movements, continuous turns, and “rise and fall”. The dance is so graceful and elegant, Waltz dancers
appears to glide around the floor with almost no effort.

1. INSTRUCTIONS

Since you are now informed and have an idea on how to dance A modern contemporary dance or Ball
room dance .It is your time to do it.

For your FIRST QUARTERLY EXAMINATION. You will choose IF modern contemporary dance or Ball
room dance that you will perform and take a video of yourself.

A. Modern contemporary dance

1. Study the steps on how to dance the modern contemporary dance.


2. Listen to your favorite song.
3. Interpret and give some moves about the chosen music.
4. Create a video showing your expression to the music by means of dance.

B. Ballroom Dance

1. Study the types of ballroom dance .


2. Choose at least one of the ballroom dance and study on how to do it.
3. You can add music to make the beat better if you want.
4. Create a video showing that you are doing the chosen ballroom dance.
5. You can browse your Youtube apps to watch the chosen ballroom dance.

2.TASK
1. Make a video of your own dance version.
Here are the steps to do.
A. Look for the wide space on your place for you to move or dance safely and comfortably.
B. Use Cellphone or digital cameras to capture a video of your dance.
*If you don’t have good quality of camera it’s okay just take a video and submit it. Just make sure that
you show the steps.
* If you don’t have camera on your phone or digital camera. You can ask to others to borrow their
phones. Just make sure to use it properly and return it as safe as it is.
* Be creative and resourceful
C. You can wear costume if you have but it`s not required.
D. You may ask partner or just only yourself.
E. After capturing the video you may edit it or put some effects.
