Instructions: This Learning Evaluation Situation has 3 parts. You have 2 hours and 45
minutes to complete this Learning Evaluation Situation. A dictionary and a grammar book are
okay to use. You do not need to use complete sentences when you fill in the charts. Read
the situation first. Imagine this is you.

Situation: You moved to Ottawa.


You bought a new house. Here is a
picture of your new house in Ottawa.

You found a job in Ottawa. You work


at a café that sells sandwiches and
coffee. You work from 8:00 am to
3:00 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and
Fridays and from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm
on Wednesdays. You like your job, but
you want to make friends in your new
city.

When you arrive home, you see a flyer


(an advertisement) in the mailbox. The title of the flyer is Learning for Life. You read it. It
has classes you can take. You have an idea. You will take a class to make some new
friends.

Part 1: Learning About Classes (90 min.)

Instructions: Read the Learning for Life flyer (advertisement). Choose 2 classes that
interest you. Write the information about these two classes in the chart below. Complete

Part 2: Talking to the Registration Coordinator (33 min.)

Instructions: You chose 2 classes from the Learning for Life flyer. You heard about 2
cycling classes at the Learning for Life office. From these 4 classes, choose 2 that you are
interested in. Write them here.

You need more information before you can decide which class to take. Talk to the registration
coordinator at the Learning for Life office. Your teacher will be the registration coordinator.
Talk to your teacher (the registration coordinator) for 2 to 3 minutes. You can use your notes
on page 6 when you talk.

Make sure you:

 Introduce yourself politely


 Talk about your 2 choices of classes
 Answer your teacher’s questions about your preferences
 Answer your teacher’s questions about what you like about each class
 Answer your teacher’s questions about your work schedule
 Ask 2 questions (Suggestions: methods of payment, cancellation policy, address and
phone numbers of schools where classes are held, etc.)
 Ask 2 questions about the classes using the future tense
 Explain that you are not ready to decide which class to take
 End the conversation politely

Part 3: Deciding Which Class You’ll Take (45 min.)
Instructions: On page 6, you were interested in 2 classes. Choose one of them. Fill out
the registration form for that class. Use the credit card on page 8.

On page 9, write an email to the registration coordinator.

In your email:

 Greet the registration coordinator politely


 Explain that you chose a class
 State which class you want to take
 Explain that you will send the registration form
 End the email politely

In your email, you will be evaluated on spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary.
