VIBRATION ENGINEERING

ASSIGNMENT NO. 1

SOLVE THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS PROPERLY.

1. A 3 kg block is suspended from a spring with stiffness of k =200 N /m. If the block
is pushed 50 mm upward from its equilibrium position and released from rest,
determine the equation that describes the motion. What are the amplitude and the
frequency of the vibration? Assume that positive displacement is downward.

2. A cable is used to suspend the 800 kg safe. If the safe is lowered at 6 m/s when the
motor controlling the cable suddenly jams(stops), determine the maximum tension in
the cable and the frequency of vibration of the safe. Neglect the mass of the cable
and assume it is elastic such that it stretches 20 mm when subjected to a tension of
4 kN .

3. A cylinder of mass m=4 kg and radius r =0.30 m is suspended from a loop as

shown. One end of the cord is attached directly to a rigid support while the other end
is attached to a spring of constant k =200 N /m. Determine the period of vibration if
the cylinder is slightly pull downward and released.

4. A heavy table is supported by flat steel legs. Its natural period in horizontal motion
is 0.4 second. When a 30 kg plate is clamped to its surface, the natural period in
horizontal motion is increased to 0.5 second. What is the effective spring constant
and the mass of the table?

5. The ideal spring of stiffness k =120 lb f /ft is connected to mass B through a hole in
mass C . The weights of B∧C are 0.4 lb f ∧0.8 lb f , respectively. Find the smallest
vibrational amplitude for which C will lose contact with B .
