Shear Stress and Velocity Distribution

Consider the fully developed flow

of a fluid in a long tube of length L
and radius R; we specify fully
developed flow so that end effects
are negligible. Since we are
dealing with a pipe, it is
convenient to work with cylindrical
coordinates. Therefore the shell in
Figure is cylindrical, of thickness
r and length L.
Average velocity = 0.5 x (Max. Velocity)

Equations are valid for fully developed laminar steady flow of an incompressible fluid
such as water. An entrance length given by Le = 0.035 DRe is required before fully
developed parabolic velocity distribution is established.
For Laminar flow at a
Shear Stress and given flow rate through a
Velocity Distribution pipe of given diameter, the
required pressure drop per
unit length is proportional
to the viscosity of the fluid
