IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preparatory 1. Review
Activities Tell some waste materials starting with the following
letters and how the materials disposed.
Waste Materials How the material
disposed
Possible Ans.
D Dry leaves By composting
I Ice cream
wrapper By recycling
S Sanitary napkins Throw it in the non-
biodegradable bin

E Engine oil (used) By recycling
B. Motivation The teacher will read the situation.
● Erwin, Raymond and Greg are grade five
learners. They went to Mangahan Market. They
had noticed that there lot of garbage in the place.
People just throw their garbage everywhere. If
you were one of the three boys, what will you
do?
Ask:
1. Do you practice waste segregation?
Ans. Yes
2. Why it is important to segregate our waste?
Ans. It is important to segregate our waste so that we
can sort and separate waste according to its kind. We
can recycle also if we segregate waste.

3. Activity Ask:
Improper waste disposal led to different
pollutions. How can we contribute to lessen the
problem?

A. Activity 1 (by group)

1. Setting activity standards.
2. Gather the materials needed for the activity.
3. Distribute the materials to the group.
4. Performing the activity.

Activity 1
Evaluating for Proper Waste Disposal

What you need:

list of discarded materials at home
What to do:
1. Make a quick inventory of the discarded
materials in your home.
2. Classify the materials using the table.

Dry Garbage Wet Garbage

3. Answer the following questions:

a. Are there trash cans/boxes/containers in
your home? Ans: Yes
b. Are the trashes/garbages at home
segregated? Ans: Yes
c. Are wet and dry garbages placed in
separate containers? Why or why not?
Ans: Yes,it is separated because wet
garbage are biodegradable & dry garbage
are non-biodegradable.
Prepared by: LUCHIE N. JO
d. Do you dispose your wet garbage properly?
Ans. Yes
Conclusion:_______________________
Ans. Therefore I conclude that waste segregation is
very important so we should encourage
everybody to practice it in school or at home.
See (Attachment A)
4. Analysis 1. Group reporting and presentation
2. Answering the guided questions:
a. What are the materials that belong to dry
garbage? Wet garbage?
Possible Ans. Dry garbage includes items such as
bottles,cans, clothing, plastics, wood, glass,
metals, styrofoam, textiles and paper while wet
garbage refers to all items that are organic like
food items, soiled food wrappers, hygiene
products, yard waste, tissues and paper
towels as well as any other soiled item that
would contaminate the recyclables.
b. What do you do with the garbage at home?
Possible Ans. Dispose it properly.
c. How do you dispose your wet garbage?
Possible Ans. Wet garbage can be decomposed.
d. What do you do with the dry garbage?
Possible Ans. Dry garbage can be recycle, reuse or
sell it.
e. What materials do you commonly recycle?
Possible Ans. Plastics, metals, papers & others.
5. Abstraction Show this video before discussing the lesson.

Say:
What can you say about the video?

▪ Waste segregation. The most effective way of

managing domestic wastes is to separate or
segregate materials according to their kind,
before they become part of the waste stream.
This system is time-and-effort consuming.
However, families in localities should be willing
to spend little more time and effort to
segregate garbage if we want to improve our
environment.

▪ Classify garbage as to wet and dry. If possible,

make a mini - recycling center in your
backyard. Place similar item in one container.
Then share your recycling interest and
experience with neighbors, and barangay
officials. You can consult with the DENR
personnel about this. Wet garbage includes
animal feed and organic matter.

▪ The main benefits of effective waste disposal

include:
Prepared by: LUCHIE N. JO
❖ Environmental Protection- from pollution or
contamination.
❖ Money generation – companies may buy
recyclable materials due to their value.
Additionally, the waste management industry
creates employment opportunities.
❖ Safety- irresponsibly disposed of waste can
harm people.
❖ Exploring alternatives-where innovative
solutions to waste disposal have been found,
great strides have made i.e composting.
❖ Business philosophy – as consumers become
more environmentally conscious, it is
important for business to promote their green
strategies and environmental promise.

❖ Segregation of waste is important for properly
disposing of the vast amount of garbage
modern society produces in an
environmentally conscious manner. Different
components of waste have very different
properties, and grouping them by type allows
for proper processing or storage. The main
categories are biodegradable and non-
biodegradable wastes, but there are
subcategories in each that are often separated
as well.

6. Application Activity 2 ( by group)
List down five (5) ways to solve waste disposal
problem.
Group 1- Sci-tula. Present your answer through a
poem about the ways how to solve waste disposal
problem.
Group 2 –Sci-biz. Present a talk show about how to
solve waste disposal problem.
Group 3 - Sci-singer. Through a song present you’re
answer about the ways how to solve waste disposal
problem.
Group 4- Sci-drawing. Present your answer through
an illustration on how to solve waste disposal
problem.
Ans.
1. Reduce food waste
2. Donate Clothes
3. Save left-overs for the next day
4. Avoid buying food wrapped in plastic
5. Bring your own bag when shopping

7. Practical Applications Ask:
of Concepts and Skills 1. Describe how your family manages garbage
in Daily Living disposal.
Possible Ans. We practiced waste segregation, reuse
& recycled. We sell the empty bottles, cans &
plastic containers.
2. What are the reasons why some cannot practice
proper waste disposal?
Possible Ans. Maybe, some lack proper information
regarding the danger of improper waste
disposal, poor practices in disposing waste
(laziness).
8. Generalization ● Why is waste segregation important?
Ans. Waste segregation is important for properly
disposing of the increasing number of waste. It helps
also lessen the environmental and health problems
experienced.
● What ways should be employed to ensure proper
disposal of waste materials.
Ans. Garbage segregation schemes & recycling are
some ways of disposing wastes properly.
9. Evaluation See (Attachment B)
10. Additional activities for In your community observe practices of waste
application or disposal that make your place clean, green and
remediation healthy. Be ready to share it in the class.
(assignment)
Possible Ans. In our community we practice proper
waste segregation. We usually have three trash bins
for biodegradable, non-biodegradable & hazardous
materials. Some makes holes or trenches for
composting waste.
