What To Miss in Studying in School

by Charleson Kurt G. Ong

The COVID-19 pandemic has globally affected our lives and our country. It changed
our lives so much that it is way different than what we were before. According to the World
Health Organization (2020), the economic and social disruption caused by the pandemic is
devastating: tens of millions of people are at risk of falling into extreme poverty, while the
number of undernourished people, currently estimated at nearly 690 million, could increase
by up to 132 million by the end of the year.

Schooling had also been greatly affected by the pandemic. It had caused a
significant interruption in students' learning, disruptions in internal assessment, and the
cancellation of public evaluation for qualifications or their replacement by an inferior
alternative. Modalities like modular learning are not a very effective solution. Students
will feel like learning the lesson is an option rather than a necessity; because no teacher
will further elaborate the lecture. That is why teachers are a big part of education. They are
the ones who make the lesson from something tedious and discursive to something
compelling and fun.

Class interaction is also a vital part of education. Interacting with other people has
proven to be quite effective in assisting the learner to organize their thoughts, reflect on their
understanding, and find gaps in their reasoning. In an interview by Nandini Verma
(republicworld.com (2021), "But even when online learning seems to be going right, kids do
miss out on certain things substantial while learning online. Most kids are missing out on
their critical formative experiences, feel unsure about communication with peers, and feel
more anxious and uncertain about the future."

There are many things to miss in studying inside of a school; there are always more
things to discover, interaction is vastly open, and teaching is far more superior or effective
when face-to-face classes are applied. The fun that you get in school will always be better
than distance learning. That is why I hope the pandemic will end sooner, and we will all be
back to what we once were before.
