CHAPTER III

Methodology

This chapter presents the research method and procedure used in the

study. It includes the research design, locale and population of the

study, the data gathering instrument, the data gathering procedure and

the statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

This study utilized descriptive method since the researcher focused on

the assessment of the natural and man-made disasters and on

determining the level of the disaster resiliency among selected

barangays in the three municipalities. It is appropriate as the

subjects vary among themselves and the researcher is interested in

knowing the level to which different conditions are obtained among

these subjects and research locale.

Locale and Population of the Study

The study involved a total of 150 households as respondents among

three barangays which is Langaoan, Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur (50

households); Manaboc, Burgos, Ilocos Sur (50 households); Banucal,

Lidlidda, Ilocos Sur (50 households). These numbers present the 30% of

the total households among each barangay. The households were composed
of the following age groups; (below 18 years old), (18-25 years old),

(26-49 years old), (50-64 years old), and (65 years old or above).

Data Gathering Procedure

The survey questionnaire was used as the main data gathering. This

research instrument consisting of a series of questions and other

prompts for the purpose of gathering information from respondents. The

questionnaire used by the researcher was composed of three parts. Part

I dealt with the profile of the adults’ respondents while Part II

covered the assessment on the natural and man-made disasters relative

to fire, flood, typhoon, landslide, and earthquake. Furthermore, it

dealt with the level of readiness on natural and man-made disasters to

which the respondents practiced disaster resiliency measures.

Construction of the Questionnaire. Before constructing the

questionnaire, the researcher consulted several references and

resource

materials. Upon seeing that there were enough items to collect the

data based on the statement of the problem, the researcher started to

conceptualize the first draft of the questionnaire.

Validation of Questionnaire. The first draft of the questionnaire was

presented to the research adviser for initial comments and

suggestions.
After the comments and suggestions of the adviser had been

incorporated,

the researcher prepared the second draft for validation. To establish

content validity of the questionnaire, the researcher presented a copy

to 3 persons with knowledge and expertise on the subject under study

for comments and suggestions.

Administration of Questionnaire. Upon establishing validity of the

questionnaire, it was made ready for distribution. The copies of the

questionnaire was distributed upon the approval and endorsement. The

researcher personally distributed the research instrument to the

respondents. The researcher also informed and explained the objectives

of this research work to the respondents of the study. After answering

the questionnaire, the researcher retrieved the copies personally.

Scoring of the Responses. The questionnaire items were scored using a

5-point scale with 1 as the lowest and 5 as the highest. The scale is

as follows:

Options Scale Ranges Verbal Interpretation

5 4.51 – 5.00 Strongly Agree/Regularly Practiced

4 3.51 – 4.00 Agree/Frequently Practiced

3 2.51 – 3.00 Moderately Agree/Moderately Practice

2 1.51 – 2.50 Moderately Disagree/Slightly Practiced4

1 1.00 – 1.50 Disagree/Never Practiced

Data Gathering Instrument

The questionnaire was used to assess the natural and man-made

disasters and the practices related to disaster resiliency in the

three municipalities. The researcher administered the questionnaire

personally to the respondents. The researcher personally retrieved the

copies of the questionnaire from the respondents. The researcher also

conducted data cleaning to yield more valid and reliable information.

After data cleaning, tallying, and tabulating, the researcher asked

for the help of a statistician in treating the obtained data from the

questionnaire. The researcher presented, interpreted, and analyzed the

treated data. He also used tables and figures for clearer presentation

of data. The responses were measured and treated by means of the

enumerated statistical tool.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The data collected was analyzed using the following statistical tools.

Percentage. This was used to describe the part of a whole variable.

Weighted mean. This was used determine the assessment of the two

groups of respondents relative to natural and human-made disasters in

which each value has a specific weight or frequency assigned to it.

Ranking. This was used to determine the increasing order of

indicators in relation to its obtained weighted mean.

Composite mean. This was used to determine the average of the

weighted mean obtained from the assessments of the respondents on

natural and human-induced disasters.

t-test. This was used to determine if the data obtained from the

assessments of the two groups of respondents are significantly

different

from each other.
