Statement of Purpose

I am Dinesh Murugesan, from Tamil Nadu, India. My family is prominently a

business family in the transport sector, as service and equipment suppliers. My parents

were a constant source of inspiration and cared and provided for me and helped me a

lot for my studies. Because of their care and support I was able to score an impressive

93.6% and 80.25% of marks in my secondary and senior secondary education. And

because of my good grades, I was having the choice of my selection for my

undergraduate studies.

During my school education, I was having keen interest in mathematics. I was

fascinated by the use of mathematics in all the branches of science and the modern

advances in the field of mathematics. Because of my fascination on mathematics, I

joined for an undergraduate course of B.Sc. Mathematics in Muthayammal Memorial

college of Arts & Science, Rasipuram, Tamil Nadu, India. The academic programmes

of the college were affiliated to Periyar University.

During my undergraduate studies, I learned about a wide range of topics in the

field of mathematics and also in some of the allied topics like physics. I studied about

the advanced topics in mathematics and how different mathematical tools can be used

in real world applications. One of the most important sections of mathematics that I

learnt during my undergraduate studies is the statistics. I was interested in the field as

the field involved analysing of data from the real world and understanding what they

are representing and presenting them in different forms that can be converted into results
in the physical world. The tool of statistics can be used to measure the performance and

efficiency of resources in a company.

Right from a young age, due to my innate interest and possibility of exposure to

the business, I was very much interested in the business side of the transport sector. I

was a keen observer and was able to learn about the different parts of the business that

helps keep the huge business running like a well-oiled machine. I observed that the

machines that are beastly in nature require constant care and maintenance in order to

keep them running. And the demand and supply in the market has to maintained in a

strict fashion in order to keep the sector profitable.

Due to my native interest on business in the transportation sector and my

knowledge on mathematics, I was able to join as an “Accounts Manager” in

“Thirumurugan Transport Centre” in Namakkal. During my employment, I learnt a lot

about working in a team and also about the use of effective communication in a team

through verbal and written communications. I also gained more knowledge and

experience on the workings of the different activities that were involved in the

transportation sector. As an accounts manager, I was able to look at the different

expenses and was able to come up with protocols and tools that helped the company in

increasing the efficiency of usage of the resources of the company. By developing a

protocol for predicting the preventive maintenance of the vehicles, I was able to reduce

the cost of maintenance activities in the company. I was recognised for my contributions

to the development of the company.

I was looking for opportunities to grow the business. I was comparing the

business with different successful companies in the world, and I tried to compare my

company with them. One of my major observations were that for a company to be

successful and have an impact on the global market, the company has to expand beyond

the native country and expand their business into different markets. But managing a

business that has operations in different countries is not simple. Higher knowledge and

understanding of tools and techniques available for managing an international business

have to be developed. New skills have to be developed and practised. I decided that

opting for a masters in the same category will be the best option for the improvement of

my career. Thus, I was searching for different courses that will fulfil the needs of my

future career.

I came across the MSc International Business and Management option that

was available in the UK. I have received feedback from friends and relatives who have

studied in the UK, and they were highly positive. They told the student life and culture

in the UK is really good and supporting especially as a new international student. The

standard of education in UK is also high and the degrees offered by UK is highly

competitive and recognised around the world. So, I decided to look for educational

opportunities in the UK.

Out of the different courses in international business offered by different

universities, I felt like the International Business and Management MSc offered by

the University of Kent was the best fit for my needs. I was going through the course
page on the university website and the different recognitions and accreditations that the

course has was really impressive. The feedback on the course from the alumni was also

positive and showed that the course can be really helpful for the advancement of my

career.

The modules that were covered in the course also impressed me a lot. The

compulsory modules covered wide range of topics that will help me gain vast

knowledge and gain analytical skills and set an academic foundation for an international

career. One of the modules that I felt really necessary for me having experience in the

transport sector is the Global Value Chains, Strategy and Development, which is aimed

at introduction to the global supply chains and identification of value of resources of a

company that is available from different parts of the world and use them more

effectively. GVCs are transforming the nature of trade, and it has brought both

opportunities and challenges for business enterprises around the world. Understanding

the Global value Chains is necessary to manage a business effectively and communicate

with the different stakeholders and respond to changes in the market and make informed

decisions.

Thus, I have decided to join the MSc International Business and Management

offered by the University of Kent in the September 2022 intake. I believe that I will be

a successful student and add value to your esteemed university. Please grant me a

position to study in your university. I am waiting for a positive response from you.

Thank you.
