Interval : 0 – 95 m
Footage : 95 m
Hole Size : 36”
Mud Type : SPUD MUD
Sand Mio-Pliocene
36”SECTION DISCUSSION:
Objectives:
Provide effective hole cleaning while drilling the 36” hole and minimize the chances of losses utilizing
the lowest possible mud weight with the most economic & easily mixed mud system.
High viscosity Spud Mud will be used to drill the 36" hole. The only drilling hazard in this interval will
be a potential of total loss in the unconsolidated formation and risk of borehole instability in Mio
Pliocene. The hole will be circulated clean & 25 m3 of high viscous pill will be spotted on bottom
before pulling out to run casing 30.”
Sufficient mud chemicals and LCM materials should be kept on rig site during the drilling of this
interval to cope with the anticipated formation losses. The yield point should be maintained as
planned to ensure good whole cleaning.
To provide hole cleaning, Bentonite spud mud is recommended to be used. Enough time should be
allowed to the mixed Bentonite in order to ensure full hydration. The pre-hydrated Bentonite will also
help seal off the unconsolidated surface formation and hence reduce losses.
• Maximum use of all solids control equipment in order to maintain the Mud Weight at a
minimum.
• Minimize ECDs by controlling the amount of Low Gravity Solids (LGS) build-up in the fluid and by
optimizing flow rates.
• High thixotropy spud mud will provide efficient hole cleaning characteristics to minimize annular
loading of cuttings.
• High bentonite content mud will effectively seal porous zones, minimize fluid loss to the
formation and provide a good filter cake.
• In case of bit balling, it is recommended to use 1 to 3% of Detergent and lubricant.

This system provides a good hole cleaning capability required at low annular velocities, the high filter
loss of the system ensures the deposition of filter cake across any permeable formation.
Periodically flush the hole clean with hi viscous sweeps, the rate of flushes will depend on the hole
condition, Lime may be added to the hi-Vis sweeps to achieve good and rapid viscosity prior
pumping to the hole.
As a general rule, the more pre-hydrated gel used in the sweeps and hole displacement, the more
effectively they will perform, However while using as much PHG as possible, care should be taken
not to use up all the available Bentonite and drill water before finishing the interval.

Mud properties discussion:
MUD WEIGHT:
Mud weight should be kept as low as possible to reduce the risk of losing circulation either (partial
and seepage losses) to the unconsolidated formation at the top of the hole section, this could be
achieved by the use of all available solid’s removal equipment’s and the periodical dumping of
the sand trap.
RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES AND HYDRAULICS :
The yield point is recommended to be maintained at the high side of the proposed range to improve
the mud carrying capacity due to the low annular velocity and consequently the poor hole cleaning
while drilling large hole diameters.
PH VALUE & ALKALINITY CONTROL:
The pH value should be maintained at 12 range using pre dissolved NaOH (caustic soda) in the
chemical barrel; the alkalinity agents improve the performance of the mud products as well as
corrosion prevention.
Phase expected problems:
Down hole losses is expected while penetrating this section , Before start drilling prepare
30m3 of LCM to solve formation losses problem, the conventional LCM Materials {Mica, Nut Plug
and EMEC Seal ( Fibrous materials ) } will be used for curing losses (if any) and as per recipe below:
For 1 m3 of LCM:
o Mica (M & C) 50 & 50 Kg/m3
o Nut Plug (M & C) 50 & 50 Kg/m3
o Kwick seal (M & C) 25 & 25 Kg/m3
The pill will be spotted on bottom and lifted for one hour to two hours (wait for soak) to
assure good healing across losses zone, Pill could be repeated if required.

Engineering Recommendations:
Mix at least 450 m3 as starting volume.
Solids control equipment has to be run all times.
Do not allow the pH to drop, keep it at the PH=11-12.
Sweep the hole with Hi–Vis pills of mud, having a Yield Point greater than 40 lb/100ft2,
in order to ensure a good hole cleaning ( XANTHAN GUM might be used for increase
YP in the high viscous pill)
Dump the sand trap every three connections, or as needed, in order to maintain
the proper Mud Weight and solids content into the range.
Don’t dump the Spud mud until the cement job is done successfully.
Mixing Procedure:
The Bentonite should be pre hydrated in advance for at least 6 hours in order to allow the clays
to swell and provide good rheology.
Add Soda Ash to reduce the hardness less than 0,4g/l.
Add the Bentonite and agitate with maximum shear for at least 6 hours.
Add Caustic Soda to increase the pH if necessary.
Solids Control :
Effective solids control will be critical while drilling this interval to keep the Mud Weight to a
minimum.
All available solids control equipment should be utilized to its maximum capacity to reduce the build-
up of undesirable solids in the system, thereby reducing dilution volume, minimizing treatments, and
lowering the overall fluid cost
For this interval, the following Solids Control Equipment configuration is recommended
Shakers: Screen up as much as the flow rates will allow. Uses 50/50 up to 84/84 mesh screen, the
finer the better.

BIT BALLING
In order to prevent bit balling, EMEC detergent is usually added to the system at a
concentration of 0.85l/m3. this concentration can be increased to 1.7 l/m3 when drill
hydratable and sticky shale.
**As a preventive action to avoid this problem, 0.5-1.5 % by volume equivalent of 2l/m3 of
EMEC LUBE should be added to the circulating system by dilution at (+/-20m before reach
the Top of Senonien).
**Also diesel is a good drilling practice during bit balling problem (3-4% by volume is

Down hole losses is expected while penetrating this section , Before start drilling prepare 200 bbl
of LCM to solve formation losses problem, the conventional LCM Materials Mica, will be used for
curing losses (if any) and as per recipe below:
For 1 m3 of LCM:
o Mica (M & C) 50 & 50 Kg/m3
o Nut Plug (M & C) 50 & 50 Kg/m3
o Kwick seal (M & C) 25 & 25 Kg/m3
Said pill will be spotted at bottom and lifted for at least one hour to assure good healing opposite
loss zone, Pill could be repeated if required.
Engineering Recommendations:
Mixing Procedure:
The Bentonite should be pre hydrated in advance for at least 6 hours in order to allow the clays to
swell and provide good rheology.
Add Soda Ash to reduce the hardness less than 0,4 g/l.
Add the Bentonite and agitate with maximum shear for at least 6 hours.
Add Caustic Soda to increase the pH if necessary.

Interlayered Salts and shales in Turonian and top Cénomanian: Low activity mud requested for
shale stability.
Sénonian Saliferous, and Neocomian formations can cause severe over pull due to under gauge of
the hole size (plastic salts). It is recommended to pump water pill as per SH procedure discussed
in below.
Wash-out in the sandy levels mainly in the Albian and Barremian formations, combined with high
drilling rates, can lead to overload annulus.
High drilling rate: hole cleaning, wet ability of the large volume of cuttings, maintain LGS in
correct range.
Potential water flows from Albian, Barremian and Turonian.
Stuck Pipe : While pulling out, the string could get stuck in the Turonian or Salifere formations.
Sonatrach procedure to unstuck string:

Mixing Procedure:
The addition of components in their proper sequence when initial mixing an oil mud will optimize
the performance of each product. Organophilic viscosifiers require considerable quantity of shear
to fully develop their viscosity; therefore, more of this additive may be required on initial mixing.
As the oil mud is used over the first couple of days, improvement in the emulsion stability and
fluid loss control will vastly improve compared to what the mud was when it was initially mixed
1. Add the required quantity of base oil to the mixing tank.
2. Add the primary emulsifier as required.
3. Add filtration control additives.
4. Add lime as required.
5. Add required NaCl brine to the above mixture after adding lime.
6. Add the secondary emulsifier as required.
7. Add Organophilic viscosifiers as required.
8. Add the weighting material as required.
9. Mix above for many hrs to ensure a good emulsion formed.
The electrical stability and fluid loss control will improve after use due to the shear generated during
circulation.

Remember:
During drilling the 16”section, start to prepare the heavy mud for the next interval +/- 220m3 @
2.40sg, O/W=90/10 using 120 m3 light well prepared mud @ 0.90 sg.
The mud preparing for the next interval with 2.40 SG, must be consider the volume gain from barite
mixing and treatment required of EMEC WET , EMEC MUL and EMEC CON and lime to be mix as
program formula.
The amount of wetting agent needed are subject to a lot of things on the rig, as the mixing facility,
the barite quality, the sg needed and the mixing procedure, so the mud engineer should evaluate
the situation and add enough emulsifier and wetting agents to prevent any wetting problem.
Mud weight:
The mud weight must be maintained in the proposed range, Barite addition is according to the
hole conditions, centrifuge is necessary to maintain low gravity solids below 5%. The mud weight
adjustment is important to minimize over pull while tripping and decrease the possibility of
formations losses.
Minimize ECD's by controlling the amount of Low Gravity Solids build up in the fluid and by
optimizing flow rates.
Provide efficient whole cleaning characteristics to minimize annular loading of cuttings.
The mud weight should be maintain primarily by using efficient solids control equipment and by
running the finest screens possible on the shakers.
The yield point is recommended to be maintained at the high side of the proposed range to
improve the mud carrying capacity due to the low annular velocity and consequently the poor
hole cleaning while drilling large hole diameters. However, it is possible to use Hi Vis pills if the
hole is not being cleaned properly.
The low shear rate is the best indicator of the annulus where shear values are relatively low.

EMULSION STABILITY:
Keep the Emulsion Stability >600 volts, system treatment with emulsifiers and lime will improve
and enhance the emulsion of water to the oil phase.
Any free water in the HPHT filtrate means a poor Emulsion Stability between the Oil and Water
phases and require an immediate treatment with Emulsifier and Lime (if necessary) to reestablish
the strength of the Emulsion and avoid any further problem of Water Wetting of the solids and
settling of Barite.
When the system is newly mixed, the electrical stability will typically run at +/- 400 volts. It will
increase towards +/- 800 volts after shearing through the bit and additions of emulsifiers and
Lime.
NaCl CONTENT:
Having oil as the continuous liquid phase, does not affect potentially hydratable formations as
long as the internal water phase salinity is high enough to prevent surface hydration and osmotic
movement of water towards the formation, since the external phase is oil, invert emulsion mud
will not wash out the soluble salts drilled
ALKALINITY:
Add a sufficient amount of Lime to control the alkalinity in terms to improve the emulsion
stability, close monitoring of the lime content is required as any decrease it may be an early
indication of an acid gas intrusion.
Pump 2 m3 diesel ,followed by 08 m3 fresh water ,followed by 2 m3 diesel ,and displace the fresh
water with mud to the stuck area. Let this fresh water to soak with salt formation and work drill
string. Displace this sweep to surface by OBM. (Monitor the water salinity of this sweep), take car
that the contaminated mud will be isolated in a separated tank in order to be treated
Solids removal equipments:
The primary concern while drilling this interval will be efficient use of all solids control equipment
and maintaining optimum fluid management. Monitor all solids control equipment closely to
determine the efficiency of equipment & to maintain low gravity solids to a minimum.
EME expect that the rig will be fitted with some form of scalping shaker, followed by two linear
motion shakers, desander, desilter, mud cleaners, and centrifuges.
Shale Shakers:
Use the finest possible mesh screens (100 to 140 mesh) and screen up as much as the flow
rates will allow.
Mud Cleaner:
Use 150/180 mesh screens.
Centrifuge:
Run 2 centrifuges, one for Barite recovery and one for liquid phase.

Drilling hazard in this interval includes the following:
1. Possibility of formation losses. Use EMEC CARB (CaCo3) fine and medium as bridging
materials to avoid reservoir damage.
2. Possibility of gas influx , which may require more mud weight.
3. It is necessary to run and test the degasser.
4. Slow ROP and frequent tripping operations.
5. Using Hi-vis pills to keep good hole cleaner.
6. A minimum-security stock of Barite (100 T) and calcium Carbonate (20T) will be kept on rig
site in stock. In case, it is required for well control.
Seepage losses can be encountered, and it is therefore essential to keep a close track of mud
volumes. In case of losses in the reservoir, a non-damaging LCM should be used such as STRATA
HEAL an organic LCM that is acidizable & Biodegradable And Emec Carb (Calcium Carbonate) is
also acidizable. For seepage losses, the fine grade should be sufficient since the formation pore
throats are not large. If more serious losses are encountered then medium grade and fine grade
material should be used.
When the hydrostatic pressure of the fluid exceeds the invasion, resistance fluid will be lost to the
formation. When the permeability channels exceed a size that the normal drilling fluid cake or
particles cannot bridge then whole fluid will be lost into the formation. This is lost circulation. The
severity of the loss will dictate the criticality of the situation and the response.
Prevention: Minimum overbalance of hydrostatic head, plus ECD.
Cure: Cut down the pump rate, reduce the overbalance & Block the permeable channels

ENGINEERING GUIDE
a. The mud laboratory cabin should be fully equipped with all standard equipments and reagents required
to run all tests as per the norms API .
b. A sufficient and appropriate stock of Lost Circulation Material at different grades must be available on
rig site; an L.C.M. pill should be prepared before start drilling into the formations with risk of losses.
c. Report Flow Line Temperature regularly with each mud check. All Rheology measurements to be
performed at 120/150° F.
d. At the beginning of the hole section, or if the fluid has not been circulated for over 24 hours, care should
be taken regarding Shale Shaker screen size and flow rate. Initially it will take one to two circulations for
the mud to fully shear and warm up. The objective is to prevent losses due to screen blinding.
e. Prior to pulling out of the hole, ensure balanced mud properties and if necessary sweep hole with
30 - 40 bbl High-Vis pill. Spot a High-Vis pill on bottom prior to running casing. Ensure the high viscosity
pills are made from active mud to ensure uniform mud properties.
f. Always ensure that annular velocities are kept below critical in the open hole to reduce erosion and
ECD's. Mud Hydraulics should be reported daily and when any influencing parameters change.
g. All supervisory personnel on site should be informed of any planned dilution/mixing and of the
subsequent estimated changes in pit levels; Driller and mud logger specifically.
h. Any major treatments to the mud should be pilot tested first. This will ensure cost effective treatment.
Due to the inert nature of the system, results from the pilot test normally correspond closely with the
results obtained in the active system. It must be remembered that for some treatments, 2 to 3
circulations may be needed before the effects are seen.
i. High penetration rates and flow rates can cause blocking of the flow line and header box causing whole
mud losses from both. To avoid this, we recommend the installation of at least one mud gun in the base
of the header tank, drawing mud from the final solids control pit. The mud gun(s) should be run during
every connection and will successfully flush out this tank.
j. High viscosity pills or weighted low viscosity pills should be pumped to monitor hole cleaning. The
volume of cuttings should be observed when the pill returns to surface. If increased cuttings are
observed, more pills should be pumped or the YP increased. A fully documented sweep report should be
completed each time a pill is pumped. Furthermore, high viscosity pills should be pumped any time a
hole-cleaning problem is suspected and a circulation made before any trip.
k. The mud engineer will report the situation of the operations twice a day, that is, every morning and
afternoon and will notify the technical supervisor about any changes in the mud characteristics or in the
daily operations at the well site.
m. The mud engineer will perform a complete mud check each time new mud arrives at location, and the
results will be posted on the daily mud report as well.

daily mud report.

p. Complete and detailed hand over reports will be given between mud engineers at the end of each shift.

c. Tilt the shaker screens back to 3°. Experience has shown that this can reduce the level of effluent on
cuttings by allowing significantly finer screens to be used and enabling a greater volume to be
processed.
d. When breaking circulation, use low pump rates to give the cold mud time to warm up. If 'bottoms up'
can be reached prior to increasing pump rates to maximum this will overcome flooding of the shakers.
At least one shaker should be set up with coarse screens to process the flow while the mud is warming
up.
e. A Graco gun should be available by the shakers, ready to wash down the screens in the event of fine
clays or sands blinding the screens. Do not pump the trip tank down over the shakers while circulating.
f. Effective centrifuging is required to control the level of colloidal solids to avoid a build-up of drill solids.
Extremely efficient at removing fines, the fluid retention times can be kept lower or higher than those
of a shale shaker by controlling the input into the centrifuge, such as feed rate and bowl speed, to
produce drier discharges.
g. A saver barrel should be fitted when wet tripping. Time lost fitting a mud saver barrel may be balanced
against mud lost on a wet trip.
h. When slugging pipe prior to pulling out, the density of the slug should be 0.18 sg over the active mud
weight when the YP is 15-20 and 0.24 sg over the active mud wt when the YP is 20+.
i. All dump valves should be cleaned and checked for leaks and preferably padlocked or at least
taped off to prevent leakage or accidental dumping. Flow line gates should also be cleaned and checked
for leaks to prevent seepage or major losses to contaminated or 'open' pits.
j. All surface losses from the drill floor should be returned to the mud system via a drainage system or
with the aid of a liquid recovery unit.

Shaker maintenance is a high priority job on any drilling rig whether they are working offshore or here in the
Desert.
To have optimal performance from the screens the following has to be carried out.
- Shaker basket supports, which could be rubber or springs, need to be in good condition. The shaker
basket should sit level on all 4 corners with a basket angle of 0°.
- Screen support rubbers have to be in good condition and all the same size and height.
There is a simple phrase…. If in doubt, change them out.
- Screens need to have the proper tension when fitted, manufactures settings must be used.
- Cleaning of screens is imperative. A screen that is plugged with dry solids acts like a plate.
- Shaker basket should never be set at the maximum angle for any length of time. Premature screen
wear will be evident. 1 ½° incline is sufficient.
2. Screen Size
The mesh size quoted below are only a guide. It is imperative than worn or torn screens are changed as soon as
possible.
-When running shakers and its seen that one can be switched off, because the others can cope, instead
increase mesh size and lower the basket angles and run all shakers.
-The faster the solids are removed from the drilling fluid the less problems they can cause. Shaker screens are
very cost effective, compared to rig down time. No comparison.
There are huge ranges of screens that are on the market all slightly different in their make up. While some are
single or double-layered most, new screens are triple meshes. Some have perforated backings some do not.
We recommend that all screens used to be triple meshes with the perforated backing. The main reason for this
is screen repair. All screens that have perforated backing can be repaired prolonging their life.
Screen manufacturers are now supplying longer life screens, again in different forms and sizes. These are being
tested and more information will be forth coming.
Scalping Shakers
The purpose of these shakers is to remove large cuttings, reducing the screen wear on the secondary shakers.
Screens should be of a maximum 40 square mesh. We would recommend that if the lower screens were used
S10 over S20 would be a good combination on large hole intervals and S20 over S40 for the smaller intervals.

12.25” Interval
Screen range 84 – 210 mesh, are dependent on the available shakers, drilling rate, flow rate and formation
type.
Mud cleaner screens size should be 140 – 250 meshes.
The Dual Centrifuges to run continuously in Barite recovery Mode.
8 ½ - 6” Intervals
Recommended screen size range is 140 – 210 meshes.
Mud cleaner screens size should be 210 – 325 meshes.
The Dual Centrifuges should first be used to de-weight the mud from the previous section then with Barite
recovery mode to maintain the LGS % at acceptable levels.

This pill should be spotted on bottom, soaked for one hour while drill string is at casing shoe & establish rate of
static losses if no losses then string could be run in hole, washing to bottom. If losses not cured, repeat the pill
by increasing the concentration of CaCO3 to 350 kg/m3, and same concentration of the other LCM until no
losses encountered. Sequence will be repeated until complete returns regained.
