Activity: Experiment Time!

Teacher’s Tasks:
A. Reviewing The teacher will introduce the topic
previous lesson
or presenting using a bottle of cola and a candy
the new lesson
(mentos). Put the candy on a bottle of cola
and let the students observe the reaction. Give the students a task to take down notes about the happening on
the mixture and its result after the activity.

The teacher asks the following:

1) What was the experiment about?
2) Based on the experiment, how cola reacted to mentos?
3) In your understanding, what will happen to the mixture if we put a lot of mentos candy on it? If fewer?
4) Why do mentos candy and cola reacted that way?

Purok 1B Townsite, Poblacion, Barobo, Surigao del Sur, 8309

(086) 850-0113
304861@deped.gov.ph
5) In your opinion, how do the experiment and the volcanic eruption relates?

Students’ possible Response:

1. The experiment was all about the reaction of cola/soda when we put a candy/mentos. It is also known
as soda geyser activity.
2. When mentos was put in a bottle of cola, the mixture began to make more bubbles and the texture
was cloudy.
3. If we put a lot of mentos candy, the reaction will be so fast and the fountain or geyser will result to be
more overflowing. If fewer, the lesser it gets to overflow.
4. Because of its chemical composition (carbonated water) which is catalyzed by the mentos candy and
puts more pressure on the bottle of cola.
5. The bottle of cola and mnetos symbolizes the volcano and other chemical composition. Same as the
cola, the magma in the volcano will eventually erupt, overflow, or explode when it gets so much pressure
coming from other chemicals or gases.

Okay, I guess a lot of you now has a lot of queries and understanding about our topic which is volcanoes. So,
before we begin to our topic, let us first have a pre-test for your prior knowledge.

Pre-test:

4. What are the differences between strombolian, vulcanian and plinian?
5. Among the types of volcanic eruption, which one for you is the most dangerous? Why do you say so?
Describe characteristics of it.

Students’ possible answers:

1. The sudden occurrence of a violent discharge of steam and volcanic material.

2. The 5 types of volcanic eruptions are phreatic or hydrothermal, phreatomagmatic, strombolian, vulcanian,
and plinian.
3. Phreatic eruptions typically include steam and rock fragments; the inclusion of liquid lava is unusual. The
temperature of the fragments can range from cold to incandescent. If molten magma is included,
volcanologists classify the event as a phreatomagmatic eruption.
4. Vulcanian eruptions are more violent and explosive than strombolian eruptions. Vulcanian eruptions are
named after the island of Vulcano off the coast of Italy. This is the same island that gave us the name
"Volcano". Vulcanian eruptions contain high dark clouds of steam, ash, and gas. Plinian eruptions are similar
to both Vulcanian and Strombolian eruptions, except that rather than creating discrete explosive events,
Plinian eruptions form sustained eruptive columns.
5. Plinian eruptions are the most dangerous and explosive of the eruption types. The largest and most violent
of all the types of volcanic eruptions are Plinian eruptions. They are caused by the fragmentation of gassy
magma, and are usually associated with very viscous magmas.

Instruction:
Watch the video presentation attentively. Take note of the details which tackles about parts and geologic features
of the volcano and its structure. Using manila paper, marker, colors, and anything you want to recycle to draw or
create the type of volcano based on its structure. Make your output outstanding and present it in front. Your output
will be judged from these criteria:

Guide Questions:
1. What are the parts of a volcano?
2. What are the geologic features present in a volcano?
3. Do every volcano has the same parts and geologic features?
4. Based on the video, what are the different types of volcano based on its structure?
5. How do the types of volcano differ from one another?

Students’ possible answers:

1. Summit, Slope, and Base

2. Magma Chamber, Main Vent, Pipe, Side or secondary vent, crater, caldera, lava, magma, and ash and gas cloud.
3. Every volcano has the same parts but has different geologic features. All Volcanoes have summit, slope, and base
but not all volcanoes have secondary vent, lava, or some features of volcanoes.
4. Based on the video, the different types of volcano based on its structure are shield, cinder cone, and composite cone
volcano.
5. A shield volcano is a type of volcano named for its low profile, resembling a warrior's shield lying on the ground. It is
formed by the eruption of highly fluid lava, which travels farther and forms thinner flows. Cinder cones are the
simplest type of volcano. They are built from particles and blobs of congealed lava ejected from a single vent. As the
gas-charged lava is blown violently into the air, it breaks into small fragments that solidify and fall as cinders around
the vent to form a circular or oval cone. Lastly, Stratovolcanoes are sometimes called composite
volcanoes because of their composite stratified structure, built up from sequential outpourings of erupted materials.
They are among the most common types of volcanoes, in contrast to the less common shield volcanoes.
