In the last meeting, you talked about the

process of volcanic eruption, which includes the
different classifications of magma and the
sequence of events during the eruption.

What are the different classification of magma? Basaltic, andesitic and rhyolitic

Correct! Classification of magma vary according

to its explosiveness and it’s silica content. The
higher the silica content, the stronger the
eruption.

Basaltic is the least explosive compared to

Compare the three classification of magma base andesitic while rhyolitic is the most explosive
on its explosiveness

Well said! I know all of you are already familiar

with the classification of magma.

Now I have here a sequence of event during the

process of volcanic eruption

Someone from the class, kindly go to the board

and arrange it from 1-5.

Very good! I like your energy today! I know you

are ready now to move to our next lesson.

Are you now excited?

Before we proceed, I have here an activity.

ENGAGE

Activity 1: Word Hunt

Instructions:
Instruction: Participants search for words within
a grid of letters, connecting adjacent letters
horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to form
words; words must be at least 7 letters long and
can be found forwards, backwards, or in any
direction.

Yes, sir!
Are the instructions clear?

Thank you everyone!

The word you’ve just answered are connected

to the topic that we will discussion today.
Volcanic Hazard, sir!
Any guess what is our topic?

Now, let’s identify the learning objectives for Objectives

this study. Mr. Mendoza can you read them
aloud?” At the end of the 60 minutes discussion, 85%
of the students should be able to:

 identify various volcanic hazards;

 list the positive and negative effects of
volcanic eruptions; and
 raise awareness of volcanic hazards in
the Philippines
Now, let’s learn more in our discussion.
EXPLORE

ACTIVITY: VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS: CAUSE

AND EFFECT

Instruction: I will divide the class in 3 groups.

Your task is to list down the effects of the
following materials on human and other living
things. I will give you 10 minutes to answer the
activity. But before that, everyone, kindly read
the criteria for your activity.

Yes sir!

You may now begin.

(The students will perform the activities for 10

class.
Give yourself a big round of applause for a job
well done.
ELABORATE
At this time, I am going to discuss all the
processes involve in the volcanic eruption.

Let’s do it in step-by-step process.

Step 1: Volcanic activities include the melting of

solid rocks in the mantle which became thick
molten materials called magma.

Based on your own opinions, what can you say

about magma? Magma is molten rock beneath the Earth's
surface.

Very good. Magma is the molten rock which lies

underneath volcanoes. It is formed at
destructive plate boundaries and is rich in
silicate.

For your information, magma has different

classification: Basaltic, andesitic and rhyolitic
magma. This classification is different from one
another based on its explosiveness and their
silica content.

Basaltic magma has the lowest silica content,

typically around 50%. It is the least explosive
type of magma due to its low viscosity. It tends
to flow more easily and form gentle, non-
explosive eruptions.

The term viscosity is mentioned. Do you have Viscosity is a measure of a liquid’s ability to
any idea about this word? Based on your flow.
previous knowledge, what is viscosity?

Correct! Viscosity is a measure of how thick or

sticky a fluid is. High viscosity means the liquid
is thick and flows slowly, like honey, while low
viscosity means the liquid is thin and flows
easily, like water. Understood? Yes sir.

On the other hand, andesitic magma has a

moderate silica content about 60%. It exhibits
moderate explosiveness. Its viscosity is higher
than basaltic magma, leading to more explosive
eruptions compared to basaltic magma.

Lastly, rhyolitic magma has the highest silica

content, typically over 70. It is the most
explosive type of magma due to its high
viscosity. It tends to trap gases, leading to
highly explosive eruptions with the potential for
pyroclastic flows and ash clouds.

Understood?

Again, what are the three classifications of Basilic, andesitic and rhyolitic magma
magma?
1. Basaltic
How do we arrange it base on the 2. Andesitic
explosiveness? 3. Rhyolitic

Step 2: In the next step, magma moves

upward and accumulates in an area called
magma chamber. Because of the continuous melting of rocks, it
rises upward and since it is light or less dense
What do you think is the reason why magma compared to the surrounding rocks inside.
rise?

Very good! This happens because its hotter and

lighter, creating pressure that pushes it upward
toward the Earth surface.

Step 3: High temperature and pressure push Here sir!

magma through the openings like vents.

In the illustration from the board, can someone

point out the vent?

That’s correct. That is the part where magma

rise and make way to the top.

Step 4: When pressure is too high, magma Pressure refers to the force exerted on an
bursts out onto the surface. area.

What do we mean by pressure?

The magma filling inside the chamber.

Very good what do you think are the causes of

pressure to increase inside the volcano?

Correct! Another factor is that the dissolve

gases inside the volcano such as water vapor, Yes sir!
carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide are trapped
causes the pressure to increase.

Understood, class?

Step 5: Molten rock flows out, forming lava

streams.

This is the last step of the process. The magma

comes outside because of the pressure that Yes sir.
leads to the ejection of ash, hot gases and rocks
or debris.

valuable insight. We learn that knowledge of
volcanic eruption processes is essential for
protecting lives, property, and the environment
in volcanic regions and advancing scientific
understanding of our planet.
Yes sir

Okay, very good everyone!

Now you know the processes of volcanic
eruption. Is everything clear now class?

Did you understand Orbon?
