I HAVE MY
LAYERS
Layers is an essential
feature in digital image editors
like GIMP as it separates every
element of your work into
individual layers. When using
image editors that enable layers,
it is good practice to put every
change or element you add in a
separate layer.

3
1. To create a new file in GIMP, go to the menu bar and
click on File ▶ New… or simply press Ctrl + N.

4
2. In the Create a New Image dialog box, input 550 pixels for
the width and 370 pixels for the height. Then, click on OK.

5
3. Go to the menu bar and click on File ► Open as Layers.

6
4. Locate the files you have downloaded earlier. To select multiple
files, hold the Ctrl key, then select the files. Click on Open once
done.

7
5. (1) Select the Background.png layer and (2) click the Lock
position and size button found in the Layers Dialog.

8
5. Since the layers are stacked at the center, use the Move Tool to
move each object so they won’t overlap with each other. Do this
to also identify each layer.

9
6. Move Main Building.png to the center of the canvas. Align the bottom of
the layer to the concrete drawing of the Background.png layer.
Tip: Use the Zoom Tool to precisely position the layers.

10
7. Next, place Roof.png to the top-center of Main Buidling.png.
Tip: Use the Lock position and size button to lock other layers as
you move a layer across the canvas.

11
8. When you move layers across the canvas, notice that there are
some layers that are intended to be on top of another layer but
instead are behind it. For example, Clock.png and Door.png should
be on top of Roof.png and Main Building.png.

12
8. Drag the Clock.png and Door.png layers to the top of the layers
list. Notice how those layers are now on top of
the Roof.png and Main Building.png layers.

13
9. Now, move them to their respective positions. Place Door.png on
the bottom-center of Main Building.png.

14
10. Place Clock.png in the center of Roof.png.

15
11. As you have noticed, there are only two sets of windows for the
building. Duplicate the Window-Left.png layer by (1) clicking on
the layer, then (2) selecting the Duplicate button found at the
bottom of the Layers Dialog.

16
12. Duplicating a layer produces a layer with a new name to identify
it from the duplicate layer.

17
13. Double-click on the layer name, Window-Left.png copy, and
rename it to Window-Right.png.

18
14. Position both Windows-Left.png and Window-Right.png on the
canvas.

19
15. Then, move Windows-Center.png to the center of Main
Building.png.

20
16. The final image should look something like this:
