PERFORMANCE TASK#1
GENERAL PHYSICS
OBJECTIVES c
At the end of the activity, you should be able to:
1. Differentiate accuracy from precision.
2. Estimate errors from multiple measurements of a physical quantity using variance.
3. Use the least count concept to estimate errors associated with single measurements.
MATERIALS:
Computer
MS Word
PHET Simulation app
Calculator
Pen
Paper
PROCEDURE:
1. Click the link for the PHET simulator about pendulum:
https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/pendulum-lab/latest/pendulum-lab_en.html and choose intro.
2. Swing the pendulum at exactly 90°.
3. Tick the box of stopwatch.
4. Measure the period of the simple pendulum using the stopwatch.
5. Repeat the recording of time of period of pendulum for 5 times.
6. Record the data.
7. Determine the mean, variance, standard deviation, and measured period of the pendulum.
8. Give your interpretation of the data of variance and standard deviation.
RECORDED DATA:
TRIALS TIME (s)
1 00.00.94 s
2 00.00.92 s
3 00.00.95 s
4 00.00.95 s
5 00.00.97 s
𝑥̅ = 0.946 𝑠
VARIANCE (5 POINTS) ∑(0.94−0.946)2 +(0.92−0.946)2 +(0.95−0.946)2 +(0.95−0.946)2 +(0.97−0.946)2
𝜎2 = 5
0.00132
𝜎2 = 5
𝜎 2 = 0.000264 s
STANDARD DEVIATION (5 𝜎 2 = 0.000264
POINTS)
𝜎 = √0.000264
𝜎 = 0.016248 s
MEASURED PERIOD OF THE
PENDULUM (5 POINTS)
The measured period of the pendulum is (0.9 ± 0) s.
INTERPRETATION OF DATA (5
POINTS)
The data presented is precise and the measurement is close to
average.
