Application of Derivatives. Show the complete differentiation steps for each

problem and answer the questions that follow.

A. It is estimated that 𝑡 years from now, the population of a certain suburban

𝟔
community will be 𝑷(𝒕) = 𝟐𝟎 − thousand. Note: Multiply your answers in
𝒕+𝟏
numbers 2 to 4 by 1000.

1. Derive a formula for the rate at which the population will be changing with
respect to time 𝑡 years from now or what is 𝑷′(𝒕)?
6
𝑃′(𝑡) = 20 − 𝑡+1
𝑡+1(0)− 6(1)
𝑃′(𝑡) = − (𝑡 + 1)2
6
𝑃′(𝑡) = (𝑡 + 1)2

2. At what rate will the population be growing one (1) year from now or what
is 𝑷′(𝟏)?
6
𝑃′(1) = (1 + 1)2 (1000)
𝑃′(1) = 1.5(1000)
𝑃′(1) = 1500

3. By how much will the population actually increase during the second year
or what is 𝑷(𝟐) − 𝑷(𝟏)?
6
𝑃(1) = 20 − 1+1
= 20 − 3 = 17(1000) = 17 000
6
𝑃(2) = 20 − = 20 − 2 = 18(1000) = 18 000
2+1
18 000 – 17 000 = 1 000

4. At what rate will the population be growing 9 years from now or what is
𝑷 ′(𝟗)?
6
𝑃′(9) = (9 + 1)2 (1000)
3
𝑃′(9) = 50 (1000)
𝑃′(9) = 60

5. What will happen to the rate of population growth in the long run?
As the years go by, the rate of population growth will continue to decrease.
B. A bacterial cell is spherical in shape. Find the rate of change of the volume of
the cell with respect to the radius when the radius is:

6. 1.5𝜇𝑚(micrometers) or what is 𝑉′(𝑟) = 𝑉′(1.5)?

𝑉′(1.5) = 4𝜋(1.5)2
𝑉′(1.5) = 4𝜋(2.25)
𝑉′(1.5) = 28.27

7. 2𝜇𝑚(micrometers) or what is 𝑉′(𝑟) = 𝑉′(2)?

𝑉′(2) = 4𝜋(2)2
𝑉′(2) = 4𝜋(4)
𝑉′(2) = 50.27

The volume of a sphere is: 𝑉(𝑟) = 𝜋𝑟 3; where 𝑉=volume of the sphere

3
𝑟 = 𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑢𝑠 of the sphere
Note: DO NOT Convert 𝝅 to 3.1416. Just leave it as it is.

C. If water is being drained from a swimming pool and 𝑉(𝑡) liters is the volume of
water in the pool 𝑡 minutes after the draining starts, where
𝑽(𝒕) = 𝟐𝟓𝟎(𝟏𝟔𝟎𝟎 − 𝟖𝟎𝒕 + 𝒕𝟐) 𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔, find:

8. the average rate at which the water leaves the pool during the first five (5)
minutes.
𝑉 (𝑡) = 250(1600 − 80𝑡 + 𝑡 2)
𝑑(1600 − 80𝑡 + 𝑡 2 ) 𝑑(20)
𝑉′(𝑡) = 250 ∙ + ∙ (1600 − 80𝑡 + 𝑡 2 )
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥
𝑉′(𝑡) = 250 ∙ 2𝑡 − 80 + 0 ∙ (1600 − 80𝑡 + 𝑡 2)
𝑉′(𝑡) = 250 ∙ 2𝑡 − 80
𝑉′(𝑡) = 500𝑡 − 20 000

9. how fast the water is flowing out of the pool five (5) minutes after the
draining starts or what is 𝑉′(5)?
𝑉′(5) = 500(5) – 20 000
𝑉’(5) = 2500 – 20 000
𝑉’(5) = -17 500
