Introduction
This guideline enables dealers and customers to benefit from cost reductions that are made possible
by reusing parts and salvaging parts. Every effort has been made in order to provide the most current
and accurate information that is known to Caterpillar Inc. Since Caterpillar makes ongoing changes
and improvements to Caterpillar products, this guideline can be used with the latest technical
information that is available from Caterpillar in order to ensure that such changes and improvements
are incorporated.

Summary
This guideline provides procedures for visual inspection of piston pins. The information that is given
in this guideline can be used to determine if a piston pin can be used again. If a piston pin meets the
specifications, the pin can be expected to give normal performance until the next overhaul, when the
pin will be used again in the same application.

There are two types of piston pins. One type of pin is a straight pin. The other type of pin has ends in
the shape of a barrel.

Piston Pins that are Reusable


A piston pin can usually be used again if the following specifications are met.

z The piston pin has no signs of scratches, grooves, or nicks.

z The piston pin has no indication of smearing or metal transfer.

z The surface finish is 0.125 micrometer (5.0000 microinch).

z The piston pin has no wear steps that are larger than 0.005 mm (0.0002 inch).

Procedure to Clean the Piston Pins


Note: Piston pins do not need to be cleaned if the surfaces of the pins are smooth and the surfaces
have an acceptable surface finish. Refer to Illustration 33 and Illustration 34.

Use only 8T-7748 Deburring Wheel in order to clean the discoloration from the piston pins. If 8T-
7748 Deburring Wheel is used properly, the surface finish will not be damaged.

The discoloration around the circumference of the piston pin is acceptable if the surface is still
smooth.

A good solvent can normally remove deposits of dirt and deposits of oil, but not discoloration. While
the discoloration is acceptable, discoloration can be removed with the 8T-7748 Deburring Wheel .
Refer to Illustrations 33, 34, and 35.

Use only the 8T-7748 Deburring Wheel that is installed with two 6V-2032 Adapters to clean the
piston pin. See Illustration 33. If 8T-7748 Deburring Wheel is used correctly, metal will not be
removed. If 8T-7748 Deburring Wheel is used correctly, the correct surface finish of 0.125

micrometer (5.0000 microinch) will be maintained.

Note: Do not use the 6V-2033 Polishing Brush which looks like the 8T-7748 Deburring Wheel .

8T-7748 Deburring Wheel has an outer diameter of 203.2 mm (8.00 inch). The inner diameter is
76.2 mm (3.00 inch). The width is 25.4 mm (1.00 inch). If necessary, the 12.7 mm (0.50 inch) pilot
hole on 6V-2032 Adapter can be made larger. Two wheels can be installed together for more width.
Use a piece of 76.0 mm (3.00 inch) tubing to hold the wheels together. Check the information on the
wheel for the correct maximum revolutions per minute (RPM) for operation. Then check the RPM of
the grinder. It is important to turn the piston pin slowly against the wheel. Do not hold the piston pin
in the same position for more than five seconds. The finish must be even in smoothness around the
piston pin.

Procedure to Check Surface Finish


The surface finish on the piston pins must be at least 0.125 micrometer (5.0000 microinch). See
Guideline for Reusable Parts and Salvage Operations, SEBF8034, "Valves and Valve Springs
Specifications" for a list of suppliers of analyzers for surface finishes.

The piston pins can be checked for wear steps by hand. Refer to Illustration 36. If a wear step is felt,
the piston pin must be inspected more carefully. If a wear step can be felt, the wear step is more than
0.005 mm (0.0002 inch). Refer to Illustration 37.

To be acceptable, a wear step must be no larger than 0.005 mm (0.0002 inch). The measurement is
possible with a V-block, a 3P-1568 Dial Indicator , a 6V-6167 Contact Point , and parts from a 8S-
2328 Dial Indicator Gp . Refer to Illustration 38 and Illustration 39.

Note: The back of the 3P-1568 Dial Indicator must be replaced with a back that has a vertical center
lug. Refer to Illustration 39.

Pin Plugs

Piston plugs can be reused if there are no signs of cracking, pitting, or scratches. This applies to all
surfaces. Carefully check the fillet for cracking. Refer to Illustration 40.

Any wear on the plug must be evenly distributed around the top of the plug. Refer to Illustration 41.
Normal wear will appear as a polished surface and no material will be removed. If the top of the plug
shows signs of wear on the material, do not use the plug.

NOTICE
If the plug or pin assembly is dropped, do not use it again. Dropping
can cause impact loading which can cause a crack in the plug. The
crack may not be visible during inspection. These cracks can then
cause the parts to fail which will result in engine damage.

Retaining Rings
The retaining rings for the piston pins should be used once. A retaining ring should be replaced with
a new ring after being removed from a piston.

Storage Procedures
Proper protection of the piston pins from corrosion is very important. Corrosion will start in as little
as one hour after the piston pins have been cleaned.

When the piston pins will not be inspected for one hour or less the piston pins should be coated with
a rust or corrosion inhibitor or coated with clean engine oil. The piston pins should be individually
wrapped in order to prevent contamination, and the piston pins should be stored in a protected area in
order to avoid damage. See Illustration 42.

When the piston pins will not be inspected in two days or more the piston pins should be coated with
a rust or corrosion inhibitor or coated with clean engine oil and the piston pins should be individually
wrapped. The wrapped piston pins should be placed in a container which is clean and structurally
solid. The container should be covered or wrapped in plastic in order to prevent damage and
contamination to the piston pins. See Illustration 43.
