CONSIDER THE SCORES: 22, 25, 30, 14, 19, 16, 20, 21, AND 19.
DETERMINE THE Q1, Q2, AND Q3 USING THE FOLLOWING
METHODS.

A. GENERAL METHOD

1. Arrange the scores in ascending order.

14,16,19,19,20,21,22,25,30

2. Find the middle score/s

14,16,19,19,20,21,22,25,30
median Q2 median
3. Find the first and third quartile
14,16,19,19,20,21,22,25,30
Q1 Q3
Q1 = 16 + 19 Q3 = 22+25
2 2
Q1 = 17.5 Q3 = 23.5

Therefore, Q1 = 20
Q2 = 117.5
Q3 = 23.5
B. MENDENHALL AND SINCICH METHOD

Arrange the data in ascending order.

14,16,19,19,20,21,22,25,30

Position for Q₁ = n+1 th item

4
= 9+1
4
= 10
4
= 2.5
= 3rd item

The computed value is 2.5 becomes 3 after rounding up. The

lower quartile value (Q₁) is the 3rd data element so Q₁ = 19

Position for Q2 = n+1 th item

2
= 9+1
2
= 10
2
= 5th item

Therefore, Q2 = 20
Position for Q3 =3(n+1) nth item
4
= 3(9+1)
4
= 3(10)
4
= 30
4
= 7.5
= 7th item

The computed value is 7.5 becomes 7 after rounding down. The

upper quartile value (Q3) is the 7th data element so Q3 = 22

C. LINEAR INTERPOLATION

1. Arrange the no. in ascending order.

14,16,19,19,20,21,22,25,30

2. Locate the position of the score in the distribution.

Q1 = 1 (n+1) Q2 = 1 (n+1) Q3 = 3 (n+1)
4 2 4
= 1 = 1 (9+1) = 3 (9+1)
(9+1)
4 2 4
= 1 (10) = 1 (10) = 3 (10)
4 2 4
Q1=2.5 Q2=5th term Q3=7.5
3. Find the difference between the 2 values wherein Q1 and
Q3 are situated.

Q1= 19-16 = 3 Q3 = 25-22 = 3

4. Get the decimal part result in step 2 & multiply it with the
result in step 3.

Q1= 0.5x3 = 1.5 Q3 = 0.5x3 = 1.5

5. .Add the result in step 4 to the smallest no. in step 3 get the
value of Q1.

Q1= 1.5+16=17.5 Q3 = 1.5+22=23.5

Therefore, Q1 = 20
Q2 = 17.5
Q3 = 23.5
