DESCRIBE THE PRESENT A N D ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

Originally the Hueston stone farmhouse was a simple, rectangular building

of coursed stone. The five-bay facade has a recessed center entrance with
single l i g h t transom. Windows were 6/6 l i g h t , deeply set i n t h e i r wood frames.
The windows and doors had stone voussoirs; the windows had stone s i l l s .
Massive i n t e r i o r end chimneys and square windows i n the two gable ends were
the only other major architectural features. An early photo sh<iows a narrow
two-story, lean-to addition at the rear of the house.

Tod'\y the original stone portion remains. The roof i s covered with wood
shingles and there i s a plain wood cornice. Paneled shutters have been added
at the windows and a classical architrave surrounds the entrance. On the west
end of the house i s an open, gable-roofed porch. The open porch continues
across the end bay at the rear of the house. There i s a two-part, two-story
frame addition extending north from the rear of the house. I t covers the
four remaining bays across, the rear. There i s a screened i n porch along the
west side of the addition. The other sides have 6/6 l i g h t windows. The
porch and addition were b u i l t i n 1938. T.« i,;. , ,,r'

SPECIFIC DATES 1813, 1939 BUILDER/ARCHITECT Matthew Hueston

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

This building i s a fine example of r u r a l , stone architecture. The overall simplicity

of the building reveals i t s original functional importance and the stone construction
i l l u s t r a t e s the needed strength of dwellings intended to withstand the rigors of
early nineteenth century l i f e . I t has become a significant local landmark. Matthew
Hueston was one of the earliest settlers i n the Northwest Territory. He became
one of the f i r s t and largest landowners i n Butler County. He held several local
offices and was considered an important local figure. .. A y.

Matthew Hueston (1771-1847) was bom i n Franklin County, Pennsylvania. His father
was k i l l e d by Indians when Matthew was only two. Matthew trained as a tanner and
currier and i n 1793 floated down the Ohio to Cincinnati where Gen. Anthonly
Wayne's expedition was being organized. In time he became f u l l time commissary *
at ^ r t Washington and served the same position with Wayne's army during 1794-95.
He then set up an army store at Fort Greenville and another at Fort Washington.
He lost much of his money during a long i l l n e s s , but eventually paid o f f his
debts and accumulated a large reserve with which he purchased land i n 1800. i .

Hueston's f i r s t farm was located four miles south of Fort Hamilton i n 1802.
Here he b u i l t a log house which he ultimately transformed into "Hueston's Tavern",
complete with ballroom. This was only the start o\f his land acquisitions, f o r
he was to become the largest land holder i n Butler County.

On April 15, 1802, Matthew Hueston married Catherine Davis and they moved to his
F a i r f i e l d Township farm. They remained here u n t i l 1813 when he b u i l t a handsome
stone mansion on Four-Mile Creek In Hanover Township. Near the home he established
a g r i s t m i l l , saw m i l l , and tenant houses. The Hueston's had nine children.

In the beginning of the 19th century, Hueston took an active part i n the Ohio
m i l i t i a and became a colonel of the Second Regiment. During the War of 1812, upon
the surrender of General William Hull to the B r i t i s h forces at Detroit, Hueston
offered his services to the government and became the purchasing agent for the
contractor of the Northwestern army. This m i l i t a r y organization was under the
command of the future president, William Henry Harrison.

Hueston was a justice of the peace i n both F a i r f i e l d and Hanover townships. He

held the position i n Hanover township f o r 23 years. He was also a commissioner of
Butler County from 1826 to 1835. He served as a member of the board of directors
of the Bank of Hamilton from 1826 to 1827 and for 14 years on the board of directors
of the Miami Bridge Company. He lived i n the stone house for 23 years and i n the
mid 1830's Hueston moved to Rossville to a home on the northwest comer of Third §
Franklin Streets. The stone house passed to his daughter, Eliza.
