Problem 1:

Fig. 1 shows the cross-section of a precast prestressed column stressed with 6#13 stress-relieved seven-
wire strands. The stress-strain relationship for prestressing strands is shown in the figure. Knowing that:
fc’ = 40 MPa, fci’= 30 MPa, fpe=1000 MPa, and Ep=190x103 MPa:

a. Sketch an approximate design interaction diagram for the shown cross-section considering moments
about the y-y axis (use the points of axial tension, axial compression, pure moment, and balanced
failure).

b. Calculate the maximum factored compressive and tensile axial forces that the column can support at
an eccentricity of 230 mm.

c. If the column effective length is 6 m, calculate the maximum eccentricity for the compressive axial
force calculated in step b using the methods explained in the lecture: modified interaction diagram
  h2 
and detailed calculation method  assume Δ mid  .
