C. Presenting examples POEM PRESENTATION

/instances of the new
lessons THE LOST ELEMENT
by: Jaypee Kadalem Balera

I think I was lost

My home is too far at any cost
I am tired finding home-made of lead
So that solar radiation will not anymore be spread,
The heat from Sun makes me float
Like Helium inside a balloon that makes it bloat
As I go far, I feel numb and bursting
Like a bullet powder made of Potassium Nitrate that makes us shaking
I hope I can go home now
I feel my lungs did not
function somehow Hope
oxygen will fill me
completely
Before carbon dioxide will be mine totally
As I walk in the lonely road above the mountains
It is sad to see land mine of gold and copper be broken
This shows how the environment suffered much everyday
Hope my home will be back with me again like a brand-new day
My body is already in pained and drained
With essential elements from water made up of hydrogen and oxygen
I want to quench my thirst
soon To fast track the lost
element which is my Home.

- What are the elements and compounds stated in the poem?

Elements and Compounds are all around us.

What are elements?

- Elements are made up of atom or atoms of the same kind. They
are the simplest type of matter and cannot be broken down into
components. Each element is made entirely from one type of
atom. Each element is unique, and no two elements have the
same set of properties. Some are in the same state, but they
have different properties.
- The elements can be classified as metals, nonmetals,
or metalloids.
 Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity, and are
malleable (they can be hammered into sheets) and ductile (they
can be drawn into wire).  Most of the metals are solids at room
temperature, with a characteristic silvery shine (except for
mercury, which is a liquid).
 Nonmetals are (usually) poor conductors of heat and
electricity, and are not malleable or ductile; many of the
elemental nonmetals are gases at room temperature, while
others are liquids and others are solids.
 The metalloids are intermediate in their properties.  In their
physical properties, they are more like the nonmetals, but under
certain circumstances, several of them can be made to conduct
electricity.  These semiconductors are extremely important in
computers and other electronic devices.
- On many periodic tables, a jagged black line (see figure below) along
the right side of the table separates the metals from the nonmetals.
The metals are to the left of the line (except for hydrogen, which is a
nonmetal), the nonmetals are to the right of the line, and the elements
immediately adjacent to the line are the metalloids.

What are compounds?

- Compounds are combination of two or more elements like
water which is a combination of Hydrogen and Oxygen; salt
which is made up of sodium and chlorine; and rusts formed
when an iron reacts with oxygen.
- Compounds can be broken down into its components through a
chemical process and formed when two elements are combined.
It has unique properties that are different from the properties of
the elements that make them up.
- When elements combine to form compounds, there are two
major types of bonding that can result.  Ionic bonds form when
there is a transfer of electrons from one species to another,
producing charged ions which attract each other very strongly
by electrostatic interactions, and covalent bonds, which result
when atoms share electrons to produce neutral molecules.  In
general, metal and nonmetals combine to form ionic
compounds, while nonmetals combine with other nonmetals to
form covalent compounds (molecules).

E. Discussing new concepts Use of Game “Element” or “Compound”

& practicing new skills #2 Directions: Identify the following pictures if it is an element or
compound. Write E if it is an element and C if compound.

1. Copper _E_

2. Table salt _C_

3. Diamond _E_

4. Neon Gas _E_

5. Pure Water
_C_

Use of GAME “OBSERVE IT!”

Directions: Look and bring any food product label. Paste your chosen
food product label in the box. Identify which of the substances are
classified as elements and compounds. From the contained compounds,
choose three and determine the constituent elements.
F. Leads to Formative Differentiated Activities/Instruction
Assessment 3) Group Activity

Group 1 Explore It!

Directions: The group will be given set of cards. Task cards direct
students to take a closer look at how elements and compounds are
different from one another. The cards ask students to make observations
and write their findings on their lab sheet.

Group 2 Watch It!

Directions: Students will be watching a three-minute video explaining
the differences between elements and compounds. Students will then
answer questions related to the video and record their answers on their
lab station sheet. For example, how is a mixture different from a
compound? How are the atoms in a compound held together? Classify
three examples as either elements or compounds.

Group 3 Research It!

Directions: Students will interact with a presentation explaining how
elements are differ from compounds. At the end of the presentation,
students will answer 6 questions to check for understanding.

*Integration of Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao

*Infusion of Higher Order Thinking Skills

Valuing: (UNITY AND COOPERATION)

• Do you like our activity?
• Is our group activity easy?
• Why it became so easy?*HOTS

G. Finding Practical Use of GAME “DESCRIBE IT!”

Applications of concepts Directions: Using the Venn Diagram, describe the characteristics of
and skills in daily living elements and compounds.
