Verbos Modales

Story-I (English)
Do you know Washington Avenue? He lost his way to his
apartment. He is an elderly and ancient man. He moved to
Miami Beach twelve days ago. He came from England. He used
to live in Florida when he was young. Now, after his retirement,
he came back to Florida. However, a lot has changed in Florida.
The infrastructure in Miami Beach has changed completely
some decades ago. The number of tourists has increased greatly.
He could no longer feel connected to the city. He’s in the middle
of the street, unable to find a way to get back home. Fortunately,
he kept a small piece of paper in his pocket with his address in
it. He is asking for directions from Washington Avenue. His
apartment is at the end of Washington Avenue in Miami Beach.
He looks around. He sees a person standing in front of him. He
asks this person for directions. This person instructs him to take
the first street to the right and go straight from there. The old
man follows the person’s directions. However, he arrives at a
hospital. The person gave him the wrong direction. This time he
goes to a store and asks the cashier for directions. He told him to
go back to Washington Avenue, turn right, and keep going
straight until he reached the traffic light. Then, he should take
the second street to the right and keep straight. This time, he
followed the cashier’s instructions. The cashier’s instructions
carried him to a bakery. He becomes sad. He has no close
47
friends because he is new in the city. Finally, he decides to call
his son. His son teaches him to use the Internet and his
smartphone’s GPS system to find the route to his apartment. He
followed the path instructed by the GPS and managed to arrive
to his destination. All he had to do is follow the directions
provided by his smartphone’s GPS system. This chapter in his
life taught him the importance of technology. Now, he tells
everyone he knows that they should all take advantage of
technology. Do you use the Internet or a map to see directions?
Do you believe that the Internet is the best way?
Historia-I (Castellano)
¿Conoces la Avenida Washington? Él perdió el camino hacia su
apartamento. Él es un señor mayor y anciano. Él se mudó a
Miami Beach hace doce días. Él vino de Inglaterra. Él solía vivir
en Florida cuando era joven. Ahora, después de haberse
retirado, regresó a Florida. Sin embargo, mucho ha cambiado en
Florida. La infraestructura en Miami Beach ha cambiado
completamente hace algunas décadas. El número de turistas ha
incrementado enormemente.
frente a él.
Story-II (English)
No smoking in public places! There is always a controversy
when people talk about the subject of smoking. There are two
sides regarding this issue. One side is full of people telling that
smoking in public places should be forbidden; the other side
tells it should not be forbidden. Why is this a subject of debate?
Is it that people no longer cares about health? Smokers have a
rough time getting rid of this habit. Hence, they challenge this
law. Smoking in public places is bad for the health of the
smoker, as well as the health of those around the smoker. The
health of a passive smoker is also at risk. For example, they’re at
risk of developing asthma, lung cancer, and even a cardiac
49
arrest. Imagine! If you never smoke but you’re around smokers,
you can still develop illnesses. So, we can all agree in that
smoking gives birth to diseases. The main reason after banning
smokers from public spaces is health. In hospitals, the number
of patients have been increased because of this issue. It’s also
important to ban smoking from public places to protect the new
generation from copying this bad habit. We can also say that
young people are attracted to these bad habits. If people are
going to be smoking on the streets, children will get a bad
example from them. Children always learn from what they see.
Ultimately, everyone has their own rights. Therefore, it’s
impossible to ban smoking totally. However, banning smoking
in public places will control the number of smokers, and people
will be able to breathe clean air. In conclusion, I would like to
cite an example. A close friend of mine has been smoking very
much for the past twenty years. Now, his son smokes too while
watching his father. If someone tries to make this kid stop
smoking, he just answers he’s doing the same as his father.
Smoking is a very important issue, and it should be addressed as
such. This is for our own health, as well as the children’s health.
Historia-II (Castellano)

There is a small swimming pool in our garden. I like the pool. I

like my house very much. I’ve lived here since I was born. There
are no bedrooms on the ground floor. We use the ground floor to

family. However, my father is going to build bedrooms on the
ground floor so we can rent them. I spent my entire childhood in
this house. I have created plenty of memories in this house.

Prepositions (Preposiciones)

Story-I (English)
He refuses to go to school. He has been going to school for five
years. He has always been happy during that time. He enjoys
going to school. He plays football with his classmates. He also
does cultural activities at school. He is a good student, and he
adores his teacher. However, he has looked sad for the past
week. When his mother asked him, he didn’t say anything. He
didn’t want to go to school. He expressed he didn’t want to go.
He didn’t give a reason why. He didn’t say anything about what
was inside him. Yesterday he suddenly refused to go to school.
87
His mother was very worried about him. His mother didn’t force
him to go to school. She went to his school without him that day.
She spoke with his professor, however, it was useless. So, she
resorted to calling his friends. One of his friends told the real
story. There was a boy who bullied him at school. He developed
a fear of going to school because of that boy. She discussed this
situation with her son’s head teacher. They called this boy to the
office. They spoke with him about the bullying and how it affects
the victim. He agreed to stop intimidating and bullying him in
the future. In the end, the victim’s mother explained to her son
what happened. She also taught him two very important life
lessons. The first lesson was always to share everything with
your parents. The second lesson was to say “no” whenever you
don’t feel comfortable. We must learn to stand up for ourselves.
Today, he went to school without fear. After returning home
from school, he thanked his mother. He promised that he would
discuss everything with her from there on. Finally, he is happy
once again. The moral of the story is not to let our fears
dominate us. It’s important always to raise our voices against
evil. Someone could always be around to help, whether it’s
friends, family, the police, or anybody else.
Historia-I (Castellano)

preguntó, él no dijo nada. Él no quería ir a la escuela. Él expresó
88
Él no dijo
Nosotros debemos aprender a defendernos.
persona.

information from the animals as possible, such as their
behavior, their habits, their sleep patterns and the differences
between their body structures. She planned to visit the zoo
continuously for three days. This way, she would be able to
understand them better. First, she went to see the monkeys.
They were full of energy. However, some of the older monkeys
were tired. After that, she went to see two white tigers. She
heard that there were more tigers at the zoo, but maybe the rest
were in cages. After watching the tigers she went to see the
aquatic animals such as crocodiles, dolphins, and the like. She
went to the pool with the dolphins. She spent time playing with
the dolphins. One of the dolphins kissed her in the face. She
swam with the dolphins. By six pm, she was free. She’d enjoyed
herself very much. She made notes for the next day. She did
everything ahead of time so she could have more leisure time to
spend with the animals.

Story-I (English)
He broke his leg! He is suffering from deep pain. He fell from
the stairs. It’s so unfortunate! He was running late for class. He
was in a hurry. His room is located on the first floor and he fell
on the way down the stairs. There was no one in the house. His
cellphone fell to the ground floor. He was unable to get up by
himself, so he dragged himself in order to reach his phone. He
hurt himself, but he managed to call his father for help. His
father called a hospital near his house. An ambulance arrived in
less than ten minutes. He went to the hospital. All of his family
members went to the hospital too. He had a fracture in his right
leg. The doctor asked him to rest for three weeks. The doctor
kept him under observation for three days. He informed his boss
at the school and they arranged that he would take two weeks
off. He decided to go to work by taxi and stay in a wheelchair
because he can teach while sitting. He is truly a hardworking
man. It’s been a week since the accident and he’s feeling better
now. However, he carries a repentance. He thinks that he could
have been fine with no injuries if he hadn’t been in a hurry that
day. One of the important lessons that can be learned from this
story is not to be in a hurry. We often find out about plenty of
123
accidents in the news happen because someone was in a hurry.
We not only put our lives at risk, but also the lives of those
around us. Therefore, the next time you want to do things
quickly, keep this story in mind.
Historia-I (Castellano)
¡Él fracturó su pierna! Está sufriendo un dolor profundo. Él se
cayó por las escaleras ¡Es tan desafortunado! Él iba tarde a
No había
no debemos apurarnos.
124
un apuro. Nosotros no sólo arriesgamos nuestras vidas, si no
Story-II (English)
She asked her teacher “Should the competitions happen with a
healthy spirit?”. The professor answered her with the help of an
example. All the students listened to him with great interest. He
told them a story of a young man. There was a student two years
ago at that school. He used to win every competition, always! He
was a tennis player. He never lost a match. He was a hard
worker and he trained very much. However, he was afraid of
failing. For him, competitions were about winning or losing,
never about learning. He practiced very hard because of this.
One day, he lost despite his bests efforts. He cried very much.
He complained to his trainer. His trainer explained him that
everyone were practicing as well, and it was not his day. He felt
terrible after this. He did not sleep; instead, he played tennis all
night. He practiced very much. The next day, when his trainer
saw him, he told him that in these games one person wins and
the other loses. So it is important to learn to appreciate others
on their victories. He also told him that he looked very tired and
would be unable to play correctly if he kept trying so hard, and
he was right. The young man was unable to win a single match
that day and he was forced to learn how to accept defeat. At the
end, the professor asked the students if they played games in a
healthy spirit. No one answered him. There was a silence in the
class because everything is about winning and nobody wants to
lose in these times. Suddenly, the students said together that
125
they were going to play games in a healthy spirit. The moral of
the story: Your failures don’t define you. The games should be
played in a healthy spirit. Life is a mixture of victories and
failures. Be proud of your victories and learn from your failures.
Your goal should be to put in the effort and do your best.
Historia-II (Castellano)

Story-I (English)
A talking tree! The date was August 13th, 2011; a day I would
never forget in my life. I was eleven years old at that moment. I
was very small. I used to go to my grandmother’s house during
summer vacation. I liked going to my grandmother’s house
because there were other children about my age there. We all
used to play together. One of these kids told us that there was a
talking tree. We asked him where this tree was and he said it
was in the garden. We went to the garden to find it. Then, we
saw this tree; it was beautiful and ancient. Its bark was sturdy,
but the leaves where bright green. It seemed like it had been
there for over a million years. When we saw this tree, it didn’t
speak at us. However, my cousin told us stories of this tree. He
said that the tree could listen to us all the time. At that moment,
we didn’t believe him. However, at night when I was in the room
with my grandmother, I started to think about this tree. I was
curious about whether it was true or not. I went to see this tree. I
was standing right in front of the tree when it suddenly said
“hello my friend”. I was absolutely terrified. I ran back
immediately to my grandmother’s house. I hugged my
grandmother and slept there beside her. The next morning I
went back to the tree; however, it didn’t talk. I understood what
this meant, so I gathered courage and went to see it during the
night. I spoke with this tree and it told me stories. It told me
about a squirrel he’d met that traveled the whole way around the
Earth riding an eagle. It told me about a parrot that warned coal
miners whenever it wasn’t safe to breathe in the mines. It told
me about an old, abandoned railway in the middle of the forest
that led to a dragon’s lair full of traps, perils, and treasure. I had
a great time listening to the tree. After that night, I went back
every night to the garden to meet my new friend, Mr. Tree. I
147
stayed with my grandmother for twenty days, and had a lot of
fun because this time I’d made a new friend.
Historia-I (Castellano)
abuela. Yo abracé a mi abuela y dormí a hí junto a ella.
Me
148

Her neighbors are part of her family. It has been twenty-five
since they moved to Austin, on Lamar Boulevard. Jessica, who’s
81 years old, is a widow who’d lived alone for three years. She
lives peacefully thanks to her neighbors as they help her with
everything. Her neighbors often take her to the park. They invite
her to eat. They run errands for her. They buy groceries for her.
They met at the festival “Austin Family Music Festival”, which
was created to bring the neighborhood together. People did not
know each other before this festival. In a world where everyone
is busy, there are people who help others without motive or
reward. Miss Jessica became part of her neighbor’s family when
her husband died. Miss Jessica remembers the day when she fell
ill and she was taken to the hospital. She used to have knee
problems. Once she was unable to get out of bed, she called her
children. Her children didn’t answer her. In the end, Miss
Jessica called her neighbors. They got together and helped her.
The next day, Miss Jessica’s children came to see her. They
asked Jessica to go to the retirement home; however, she didn’t
want to go there. At that moment, her neighbors were there and
they took responsibility of Miss Jessica. Ever since that day, the
149
neighbors are always available when she needs help. They are
together in dire moments, but also in joyful moments. They all
smile together. Miss Jessica respects her neighbors immensely.
She decided to leave her belongings to them. Her neighbors are
now her real family.

señorita Jessica vinieron a verla.

The strange voices! I went to Delhi with my uncle during my last
vacation. My uncle’s family has four members: my uncle, my

aunt, and my two cousins. I had a great time with them. One
day, my cousins took me to one of their friend’s house. That’s
when I met her. We played a lot of games with their friend.
However, I still found her behavior unusual when we were
playing. I asked my cousins about their friend when we returned
to their home. They told me they had been friends with her for
five years, and they had been playing together since the
beginning of their friendship. We went to her house again the
next day. That’s when I saw that she was talking to someone in
her room. However, when I peeked inside I saw nobody but
herself. I asked her what she was doing. She told me that she
was trying to stop a fight between a couple. She described how
the wife was holding a suitcase while the husband was
threatening her with a boulder. I was disturbed by what she
said, and I also felt shocked and scared. I went to the garden to
meet with my cousins and asked them to leave. We left towards
their house. They told me that her friend behaved oddly
sometimes. I was worried about her, so I returned to her house.
Her mother was crying in the living room. When I approached
her, she told me that her daughter had tried to cut her hand with
a pair of scissors. She said her daughter was following strange
voices. I really wanted to help this girl, so I spoke with a friend
who is a psychologist. He informed me that it was a
psychological disorder called Schizophrenia. I asked my friend
to treat this girl. Thanks to modern treatment and my friend’s
therapy, now this girl is free of problems. She is currently living
a normal life.

Él me

Can we live without technology? In this day and age, technology
is a part of life as much as the heart is a part of the body. We
have technology to thank for our Internet access. Everyone uses
the Internet for many different things, and I’m no exception. I
use Internet very much, it’s something I can’t live without. There
are many types of media such as the Internet, TV channels,
radio channels, magazines, newspapers, among others. In my
opinion, the Internet has become a living necessity! It’s
incredible to see how far we’ve come regarding technology.
However, the existence of Internet would mean nothing without
ways to access it. Thankfully, a lot of time has passed since
laptops and personal computers were a commodity for the
wealthiest among us. With so many different gadgets available
for us such as our smartphone, laptop, personal computer,
television, and tablets, everything is as close as pushing a
button. Technology is a current need for every person, both rich
people and poor people. I remember the time when I was
younger and I used to complete my reports and homework using
Internet. Now I’m grown and I keep using it; however, now I use
it for my work. My brother is using it to learn foreign languages.
Even my grandmother is using the Internet; in her case, she’s
using it to listen to devotional songs. I’d like to finish by saying
that I haven’t met anyone without a laptop or capacity to
connect to the Internet.

Historia-II (Castellano)
acceso a Internet.
inteligente, laptop, computadora personal, televisión, y tabletas,
Ahora he crecido y sigo
Me gustaría culminar

Story-I (English)
Should children watch movies? First of all, films have been
watched by people for more than a century. However, the
current increase in technology has resulted in a larger film
industry. Long ago, movies where black and white, and they
were silent. Also, there were no movie theaters, so movies
weren’t as available. Now, we have plenty of options to watch
movies. Everyone loves to watch movies. It’s a source of
entertainment and knowledge. The question that comes to mind
is whether movies are good for the health of children. Since
some films are informative and creative, they teach us new
things and broaden our perspectives. Many studies and
researchers have stated that it’s easier to remember things by
looking at them. Children are happy to watch movies, and it
helps them learn things better. Sometimes children get tired of
studying and learning; in this moments, all they want is to rest.
Life can’t be just about gaining knowledge. However, thanks to
the movies, children can learn something new, on leisure time,
while also creating links with their families because they’re
spending time with them. The relationships of these children
with their families are improved by watching movies. On the
other hand, it isn’t healthy to stare at a screen for far too long.
Children of a young age are especially vulnerable to this, so they
should wear glasses. If grownups don’t take care of children who
watch too many movies, they can develop vision problems.
Watching movies can also become quite an expensive hobby
because of the cost of the movie theaters. Watching too many
films can even constitute a huge waste of time. Not to mention
218
that children should always be limited to films that are rated
according to their age; this is to avoid exposing them to mature
information and material. In the end, I believe that the right
answer lies in the balance. Movies are good for children as long
as they’re not excessive.
Historia-I (Castellano)
Además, no
Story-II (English)
He works to obtain his livelihood, not to pursuit his passion. He
is a young man who has many responsibilities. He has to pay the
rent, his children’s school fees, groceries, among other expenses.
Sometimes he plays guitar at the local nightclub, when he has
the time. He can’t work as a musician because that wouldn’t
provide him enough money for his whole family. Money is
necessary to live and support a family. In order to earn money,
we need to work. He envies people who are able to follow their
passion. However, he doesn’t have choice and he has to work
doing things that he doesn’t enjoy. Almost everyone work only
to create an income. Nobody wants to take the risk of pursuing
what they love. We all have the same need to earn money. His
family is one of the main reasons why he doesn’t follow his
passion, but it’s not the only reason. The other reason is his own
lack of courage. He chose to work in a secure job instead of
pursuing his passion. His friends advise him to do the things he
220
loves. They encourage him to pursuit a music career, and they
tell him examples of people who have followed their passion and
succeeded. It’s true that it would be a hard struggle, but that
doesn’t mean that there’s not hope. A viable option would be to
start looking for music projects while maintaining his job as a
computer scientist. That way, he would keep getting paid and
only renounce his job once he got a music project to work on. He
would leave his comfort zone, work during the day and play the
guitar during the night. He agreed to follow that plan and it took
him to where he is today. Today, he is a great and famous artist.
His story is an inspiration for everyone who reads it. The lesson
we can learn from this is: Life is too short. We spend most of our
lives working, so we should work in something we love. We
should follow our passion. Life will become much easier once we
start doing what we love for livelihood.
Historia-II (Castellano)

conjunciones correlacionales, y conjunciones subordinadoras.

Our journey through the world! I traveled with my family
through Africa and Europe. It’s easy to travel in Europe because
the train can take you almost everywhere, but it’s not the same
in Africa. We had to travel in caravan with other jeeps to be safe
in Africa. We went so deep into the nature that we had to stay
with indigenous tribes. We ate what they ate, slept how they
slept, and lived how they lived. However, the experience was
worth it. We got to see meadows full of all kinds of animals. I
took pictures of ostriches, elephants, lions, hyenas, cheetahs,
zebras, hippopotamus, and many other animals. We spent our
242
nights sleeping on tents, then we woke up and restarted the
tour. They offered to take us hunting, but we deemed it selfish to
slaughter one of these animals only to take a stuffed trophy back
home. We restricted our excursion to sightseeing and harmless
activities without casualties.

muchos otros animales. Nosotros pasamos nuestras noches

Just another day at the office! At the beginning of my workday
we had a briefing with our manager. She gave us this week’s
instructions and told us to expect further reports from our
department of human resources. Then I went to do maintenance
in the fridge’s cooling system. The next thing that I did was fix
the copy machine. It broke down the day before and I had
received many complaints about it. Then my coworkers at
advertising called me to have a meeting. I knew that meant they
had a cup of coffee waiting for me, so I went immediately. I
could only afford this leisure time when I was idle, which I was
since the copy machine was up and running again. So, I went
between their cubicles and had a great time with them drinking
coffee and talking about sports. Once I was done I started
walking around the office in rounds; making sure that every
piece of machinery, as well as personal computers, were working

terminado yo empecé a hacer rondas alrededor de la oficina;
