Subtopics: Probability distributions, binomial distribution, cumulative probabilities

Rounded answers should be given to three significant figures unless otherwise stated

1. The discrete random variable X has the probability distribution given in the following table. Find the
value of y. [2]
x 1 2 3 4 5 6
1 1 1 4 1
P( X = x) y
10 10 10 10 10

2. The random variable X ~ B(15, 0.43). Find:

a) P( X = 6) b) P( X  4) c) P( X  10) [6]
d) The largest integer value of k such that P( X  k )  0.05 [2]

3. Salvador rolls a six-sided dice. The result of the dice throw is represented by the random variable X.
Write down one condition the dice must fulfil if X is to be modelled as a discrete uniform
distribution. [1]

4. The random variable X has a discrete uniform distribution. X can take any integer value from 1 to 20.
Find:
a) P( X  6) b) P(4  X  10) [2]

5. The random variable Z has a probability function

x
P( Z = x) = x = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
k
a) Find the value of k. [2]
b) Write this probability distribution as a table. [1]
c) Five values of Z are generated at random. Find the probability that:
i) Exactly three of these values are odd [3]
ii) At least three of these values are even [4]

6. It has been found that 0.1% of the light bulbs produced by a light bulb factory are faulty. The owner
of the factory decides to test a sample of 100 light bulbs every week to monitor the proportion that
are faulty.
a) Suggest a suitable distribution to model the number of faulty light bulbs in a sample of 100.
Fully justify your answer. [3]
b) Find the probability that there are no faulty light bulbs in a sample of 100. [2]
c) The owner stops production if there are more than k faulty light bulbs in a sample. Given that the
probability of the owner stopping production is less than 0.02%, find the smallest value of k. [3]

7. Patrick is competing in a shooting competition. He hits the target with probability 0.4.
a) Patrick fires 20 shots. Find the probability that he hits the target with at least 40% of his shots.
[4]
b) Patrick competes in four rounds, firing 20 shots in each round.
i) Find the probability that he hits the target with at least 40% of his shots in each of the four
rounds. [2]
ii) Find the probability that he hits the target with at least 40% of his shots in at least three out
of the four rounds. [3]
