PROCEDURE

1.0 SCOPE
This procedure defines the criteria and general requirements to carry out magnetic
particle on testing for the detection of surface imperfections in ferromagnetic welds
including the heat-affected zone and.suitable for most welding processes
This procedure is conforming to the requirements EN 1290& EN 1291.

2. PURPOSE:

To insure that Magnetic examination is used under control to examine components

and in accordance with standard EN 1290.

4.0 DEFINITIONS
The definition of this procedure as attached standard EN 12062

5.0 RESPONSIBILITIES

 The quality co-coordinator is responsible of the control of this procedure.

 The welding Inspector shall be responsible for conducting and reporting the results of
inspection in accordance with standard EN 5817and the Client’s specifications.

6.0 PROCEDURE

GENERAL
Magnetic particle examination (MT) is based on the fact that a magnetic field causes
the formation of a dispersed magnetic flow in ferromagnetic materials if there are
some discontinuities
The shape and position of discontinuities shall be shown on the material surface by
a crowding of magnetic particles
Indications evaluation shall be performed by comparison with the maximum allowable
limits of prescribed acceptance Criteria.

6.1 SURFACE CONDITIONS AND PREPARATION

Satisfactory results may generally be obtained when the surfaces are: as-welded, as-
rolled, as -cast, as-forged, as-blasted; however, surface preparation by grinding or

PROCEDURE

machining may be necessary in some cases where surface irregularities would

otherwise mask the indications of discontinuities
Prior to magnetic particle examination the test surface shall include the weld metal
and the adjacent weld metal up to a distanse of 10 mm on each side and shall be dry
, free of any dirt; grease , line, scale, welding flux, spatter, oil slag or other
extraneous matter that would interfere with the magnetic particles.

6.2 MAGNETIZATION

Unless otherwise agreed the following types a.c. magnetizing equipment shall be
used:
a) electromagnetic yokes.

6.3 VERIFICATION OF MAGNETIZATION:

For most weldable ferromagnetic materials a tangential magnetic field strength of 2

KA/MT KA/M ( r.m.s ) is recommended .
Verification of the magnetic field strength shall be carried out using one of the
following methods :
a- a component containing fine natural or artificial imperfications in the least
favourable locations :
b- measurement of the tagential field strength as close as possible to the surface
using a hall effect probe : the appropriate tangential field strength as close to abrupt
changes in the shape of a component

6.4 YOKE TECHNIQUE:

The detectability of an emperfection depends on the angle of its major axis with
respect to the direction of the magnectic field. To ensure detection of imperfections
in all orinetations, the weld shall be magnetized in to directions approximately
normal to each other with a Max. deviation of 30 o as attached table 1 EN 1290

6.5 EXAMINATION MEDIUM

Wet method
The temperature of the wet particle suspension at the surface of the part shall not
exceed 135 oF(57 oC).

6.6 VIEWING CODATION

The illuminance at the surface, shall be a minimum 500 Lx.

6.7 APPLICATION OF DETECTING MEDIA

Doc. No.: QP-8.2.4B-EN6/775
Page: 5 of 5
Rev.:1
Date: 04/11/2007 FERROMETALCO
EN MAGNETIC PART.
PROCEDURE

At least two separate examinations must be performed on each area under

examination; during the second examination the lines of magnetic flux shall be
approximately perpendicular to those used during the first examination in the same
area.
Examination must overlap tested areas in order to grant 100% of the surface to be
covered.
Examination shall be done by the continuous method: the magnetizing current will be
kept on the item while the examination medium is being applied and while the excess
of the examination medium is being removed

6.8 EVALUATION OF INDICATIONS

Mechanical discontinuities at the surface will be indicated by the retention of the
examination medium
All indications are not necessarily defects, however , since certain metallurgical
discontinuities and magnetic permeability variations may produce similar indications
which are not relevant to the detection of unacceptable discontinuities

6.9 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA FOR WELDS

According to Doc. No.# EN 1291 The acceptance levels in this standard that
can be expected when using techniques specified in EN 1290 and parameters
recommended in EN 1291 annex A and Acceptance levels are given in table 1
EN 1330-1,EN 1330-2and EN ISO 12707 ( Non-destructive testing-terminology-
Terms used in magnetic particle testing)

6.10 PERSONEL QUALIFICTION :

Personel performing non-destructive testing in accordance with this standard shall

be qualified to an appropriate level in accordanc with EN 473.

6.11 IDENTIFICATION AND RECORDING OF TESTED JOINTS

1. Each examined joint or, if necessary , section of tested joint must be clearly
identified
2. Examinations shall be recorded in the relevant form to be completely filled in.
