1. In below Figure a gas is confined to a cylinder with a movable piston. Heat Q


can be added to or withdrawn from the gas by regulating the temperature T of
the adjustable thermal reservoir. Work W can be done by the gas by raising or
lowering the piston.

1.1 Derive a formula for the work done on or by the gas in terms of the
pressure of the gas and its change in volume. (3)

1.2 The gas in the PV-diagram above goes from state i to state f in a two-
step-process. Use the formula for work done as derived in 1.1 and
determine the work done for each step. (2)

2. A straight horizontal length of copper wire has a current i = 20 A through


it. What is the magnitude of the minimum magnetic field B to suspend 1
m of the wire, that is to balance the gravitational force on it? (the mass

of 0.25 A. (2)
4. State and explain Gauss’ law and subsequently use it to derive an
expression for the electric field E at a distance r away from a point
positive charge. (Hint: Derive Coulomb’s law from Gauss’ law) (4)

5. (a). Explain with the help of a carefully labeled sketch the fundamental
principle of the experiment used by JJ Thomson when he discovered the
existence of the electron. (5)
