Observation in Biology

As students in the department of biology, students need to understand the basics of

research. One of the basics of research is observations. Observation is the act of attentive
watching, perceiving to collect and measure data during an experiment.
The fundamental skill of observations in research can be done using the naked eye or
with a microscope. However, due to humans’ limited vision, to make observations on
microscopic things such as cells and plant tissues, a microscope is needed. Therefore it is
also necessary to know what a microscope is, the components that make up a microscope and
their functions. And not only that, but knowing how to handle and use it properly is also the
basics that needs to be mastered.
A microscope is one of the things that made science today. A microscope is one of the
greatest inventions known to science as it made observations much thorough because we can
see beyond the naked eye. It even goes as far as even seeing the components of the smallest
known component of life, which are cells.
The basic observations that are done to introduce the microscope are to observe the
smallest components of life, namely cells. The size of a cell is approximately 1-100
micrometer where 1 micrometer equals to one millionth of a meter. Therefore, we need a
microscope to observe cells.
