Exercise 3:

The graph compares employment rates in the three sectors of the economy, in the UK,
2000-2010. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and
make comparisons where relevant.

The graph depicts data on the number of people employed in three major sectors
of the UK economy between 2000 and 2010.
Overall, the statistics revealed that employment rates in the public and self-
employed sectors rose dramatically, whereas employment rates in the private sector
declined significantly throughout the period depicted in the graph. Another noteworthy
finding is that, whereas the private sector was the most popular in terms of employment
rates in 2000, the public sector engaged more people in 2010.
In addition, in the private sector, the employment rate peaked over 50 and
ultimately dropped significantly just over 40 in 2002. Furthermore, it leveled off at
slightly above 40 until 2003. When we look at the Public sector, the situation is rather
different. In the first three years, the shaft remained unchanged at just about 40. The
employment rate eventually rapidly increased, approaching around 50 in 2005. Between
2005 and 2006, there was a steady decline to around 45, due to a small increase to over
50 in 2010.
On the contrary, the private sector employment rate has gone in the other way, but
a dramatic drop to 20 in 2010. Furthermore, before 2007, the employment rate in the self-
employed sector was about 20. Since then, the figure has remained constant throughout
the preceding two years.
