Free Write Exercise: Gender Matters

Instructions: Answer the following questions in one paragraph each (per question)

1. List three things you could do if you were a member of the opposite sex. Justify your
answer.
1.) First, i would try to look at myself in the mirror, y’know i have big lips and wonder if i’d
look better as a girl with big lips compared to a guy?

2.) Second, I would wait for that time of the month, a big question ive always had was what
that actually feels like? The people i’ve asked said that it’s like a big cramp or pain in
your stomach, is it like a tummy ache? or that time i got an ulcer?

3.) Third, I’d try to socialize in a different way, especially when i’m older, i wonder why
sometimes people like my aunt, mom or grandma just meet up with a friend and they end
up talking for like 30 minutes straight, not even during a meetup or a dinner, just along
the way or on a phonecall. I wonder what that’s like.

2. Discuss an experience you had (as a child, adolescent or young adult) that made you
realize that your gender matters.

Well, when i was in high school sometimes i wondered why sometimes women such as
my mom or classmates were sometimes strangely stressed, frustrated, or inexplicably
angry. Now, i knew what “that time of the month” was, but i was a pretty dumb guy so i
didn’t know it actually caused a huge amount of pain for a woman. Therefore i realized
that being a woman is actually rather hard, from your anatomy, your biological chemistry,
etc So glad i can pee standing up and don’t have to get pains every month.
