Digital Citizenship “how we should act when we are using digital tools, interacting with
others online, and what should be taught to help the next generation be better stewards of
this technology.” It is how we should interact with the online world. Devices like tablets and
laptops are present everywhere, so we have the perfect opportunity to educate everyone
about the digital world around them and how to be a good digital citizen.

9 Elements of Digital Citizenship

There are 9 elements to address when discussing digital citizenship. These are pillars of
knowledge that we should have to be aware of as technology becomes more and more
available to everyone.

1. Access refers to the number of access students have to technology. Not everyone
will have a personal device or internet at home, so we should be aware of this as
we require the use of technology.

2
2. Commerce refers to the buying and selling of items online. These could be actual
items or expertise through courses.

3. Community and Collaboration include digital relationships. Teaching everyone

how to appropriately interact on the internet is a huge part of digital citizenship.

4. Etiquette covers the rules of conduct when interacting with the digital world.
Knowing the rules before jumping online helps you to be more aware of your
digital footprint.

5. Fluency or Literacy refers to the process of using technology and its benefits.
You make better decisions when you are online if you are digitally fluent. This
also refers to fact-checking and being able to determine facts from fiction when
reading an online source.
6. Health and Welfare look at the physical and psychological side of technology. Is
there such a thing as too much screen time? This aspect also covers cyberbullying
and helping you to be aware of what you say and post online.

7. Law consists of the responsibility of using technology. Laws are there to protect
the people who use devices like smartphones, laptops, and tablets. These laws
also govern topics like cyberbullying and sexting topics.

8. Rights and Responsibilities refer to the freedoms that people have in the digital
world as well as the real world. Everyone is entitled to their ideas and opinions,
but using technology responsibly is a huge part of digital citizenship so that you
can have continued access to it.

9. Security and Privacy consist of not only protecting technology from viruses and
other “bugs” that threaten the use of a piece of technology but also protecting
personal information. You must discern fraudulent websites and users is a huge
key to keep you safe.

These 9 elements cover all aspects of digital citizenship. Teaching these different
aspects can help everyone have a positive and safe interaction with the digital world.

Digital citizenship is all about learning how to be good stewards of the digital world.
As probably the highest priority is to know how to protect yourself in the digital world. This
means knowing the difference between personal and public life.

You must:
 Understand what is an appropriate photo to post and what is not.
 How to respond to a friend when they are angry, and it’s probably not posting
on social media about it.
 Know that not everything that happens is needed to be published online,
 Understand what you should and shouldn’t be posting.

You also need to learn about digital relationships. The internet is a great place to meet
new people. You can interact with your favorite authors and follow your favorite celebrities.
The Internet can also be a dangerous world where people who seek to harm you can exist.
People are usually trusting, so you must know how to discern good relationships versus bad
relationships online. It is very important.

3
A great acronym for you to use “THINK”. Before you
post something online, whether it is information, a photo,
or a post of any kind, you should ask yourself if it is true,
helpful, inspiring, necessary, and kind.

If the answer to the following questions is no, then

you probably shouldn’t post or share the information.

 Is it kind of to post about how a friend hurt your feelings?

 Is it necessary for someone to ask where you live?
 Is it inspiring to post a motivational picture?

Many think with their emotions, so you must stop

and think about your actions before you do something rash, it can be very beneficial to you.
That’s why signs like the image can be posted all through the school or areas of your room
to remind you to make wise choices in what you share with the digital world.

With digitalization Emerging Technology also arises. Emerging technologies in

education all share a similar objective; to revolutionize the learning process of learning for
students. These technologies pledge to better enhance the way teachers and students work.
And with such technologies ruling our modern world, education is sure to get a reshape.

According to the website https://axiomq.com/blog/, this is a list of emerging

technologies that will reshape education in the 2020s

1. Augmented Reality (AR) & Simulations

Augmented Reality and Simulations have left a mark in the world of visuals.
Today, its great impact has started to control the way students learn and
collaborate with their teachers. AR has been around for some time now.
However, through its ever-developing nature, it is regarded as one of the world’s
best-emerging technologies. According to studies carried out on AR and
education, it has been put
forward that it will make a
greater impact on how
education is viewed by 2020.
Augmented Reality claims it is
the best way to capture the
dreams and imaginations of
humans. And by 2020, it
promises to help students
capture such imaginations
with the sole aim of improving
their learning process.

2. Adaptive Learning
As the name implies, adaptive learning is a technology that provides
learning activities to students, based on their needs and learning
style/behavior. Consider adaptive learning as a piece of tech which adapts to
every students’ needs in a short time. It helps students to adapt to unique
learning paths that are entirely based on their interests and learning ability.
4
Research carried out on technology has proven that it will play a huge
role in the educational system of the world in 2020. Through its presence, the
system can be reshaped, as it uses computer algorithms to orchestrate the
interaction with the learner. Although adaptive learning originated from
artificial intelligence, it still actively provides customized resources as well as
top learning activities to address the special needs of a learner.

Adaptive learning has its primary application in the field of education.

However, the technology was also built to assist business trainers in carrying
out business training more effectively. Taking a look at the level of growth the
technology is experiencing, it is regarded as one of the many which will
reshape education in the year 2020.

3. Education Technologies Based on Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial Intelligence is very well regarded as one of the most discussed

technology trends in the world. Due to its smart approach towards various
systems, the world has come to trust its technology in its development.
Although used in various fields, AI is not limited to the field of education. In
more detail, its existence has helped the world evolve, and luckily by 2020,
education is set to experience more levels of evolution from it.

By 2020, AI will reshape education. It is most likely to do this by

supporting the distribution of first-person perspectives. This can come in
handy in times when students need to work on essays, term papers, or
research papers about a specific culture or tradition.

For instance, Google bot and most search bots will attempt to read off a
short synopsis from an online search. However, a better scenario which
includes the sharing of stories from first-hand sources. And this is something
AI aims to achieve.

4. Usage of 5G Technologies in Education

5G is the fifth generation of wireless technology. Through its improved

enhancements, just about anyone using it can get high-speed and low
latency wireless technology. Students are more likely to benefit from this
unique innovation, as this promises them quick downloads of student files
and resources and more powerful networks.
Suggestions have been made concerning the special features 5G can
bring to education by 2020. One of many includes a holographic teacher who
can lead discussions on specialized topics. Another suggestion is students
can engage better in distance learning and gain better engagement from
virtual reality experiences.

5. Automation

Automation drives a huge part of the world we live in. Business and
economic sectors provide automation to better provide faster experiences as
engagement grows. By 2020, the education sector is sure to benefit from the
features of automation.
With automation, students can get a better chance of receiving lectures
automatically at specific times. Lectures can be digitally scheduled. Not to
mention, through automation, a better way to adopt the use of artificial
intelligence is well-aided.
5
6. Competency-Based Education

In 2020, people should expect competency-based education to be

playing a vital role in the system of education. Through this special
technology, students get to be matched with learning activities that are
fitted for their level of learning ability. In more detail, competency-based
education provides a means for students to advance their learning
experience based on their ability to master a skill. This allows students to
learn at their own pace regardless of the environment.

Through competency-based education, students can efficiently provide

better outcomes. It helps to measure outcomes that are entirely based on
a student’s objective demonstration of competency in a given area.

7. Learning Analytics

Learning is a very broad process and requires efficient tracking and

analysis to better understand results. As an emerging technology, learning
analytics is now being used by teachers to better record the learning
behaviors of students.

Another unique benefit of keeping track of student learning rates and

behaviors is that most teachers will stand the chance of providing targeted
improvements to courses. In education, improvement is a very important
factor that aids the learning experience of every student. This is what
learning analytics can help teachers deliver to their students. Luckily, by
2020, this will become a majorly used technology.

Education is set to experience a huge level of reshaping from many emerging

technologies special in this time of the pandemic. You can make better use of each of the
above technology by looking into each one. By researching each one, you can obtain special
insights on just how they can get the best out of their usage. This online course platforms
can help enhance the learning environment of 21st-century learners.
As a student, you should be ready to accept technology to better improve your learning
experience.
