and usage is a must. Digital
citizenship helps to prepares you to
use technology wisely and
appropriately.

 Nine Themes of Digital Citizenship
1. Access – The start of digital
citizenship is having access to
technology in order to be productive
citizens. TIP: Be respectful of those
without access to technology and
work together for equal
accessibility.
2. Commerce – When using,
downloading, or purchasing
products, we need to make sure
they are legitimate and legal
exchanges. This ensures we are
being effective consumers. TIP: I
will not be downloading or searching
for things that are inappropriate for
school and home.
3. Communication – There are so many
new ways to communicate in society
today. It is important to
communicate effectively and make
the right decisions when choosing
how we communicate with others.
TIP: I will stay on appropriate
websites for educational purposes
and use the school’s Internet
network.

4. Literacy – Understanding
technology is needed when in the
workplace. This includes new
emerging technology. TIP: I will
take an active role in participating
and learning about technology.
5. Etiquette – When using
technology users need to use
appropriate behaviors and
present ourselves in a good
natured way and teach others to
act in kind. TIP: I need to be nice
to others and act respectfully to
others.
6. Law – You can break the law when
using technology. Downloading,
stealing, or causing damage to
someone else’s work, property, or
identity is illegal. An example of
this is hacking someone’s
information or creating a bad
virus that destroys computers.
TIP: I will follow rules such as be
respectful of others property and
copyrights.
7. Rights & Responsibilities – As a
user you have basic rights to
privacy, free speech, etc, similar
to the Bill of Rights. You need to
understand your rights and use
them appropriately. TIP: I need to
make sure I am being safe and
responsible with technology.
8. Health & Wellness – There are
some personal issues to be
aware of when using technology.
A user needs to sit correctly,
have eye safety, be aware of
stress, and addiction. TIP: I need
to be careful of cyberbullying and
get help when someone is causing
harm to my wellbeing.
9. Security – There are many
dangers to be aware of on the
Internet. We need to remember
to protect ourselves, identity,
have virus protection, have
backup data, and to be aware of
others that may cause you harm.
TIP: I will work to keep my own
and others information private.
Also, I will NOT share my
passwords.
