DEFINING DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP

Digital Citizenship is a concept which helps teachers, technology

leaders and parents to understand what students/children/technology
users should know to use technology appropriately.

Digital Citizenship is more than just a teaching tool; it is a way to

prepare students/technology users for a society full of technology.

Digital citizenship is the norms of appropriate, responsible

technology use. Too often we are seeing students as well as adults
misusing and abusing technology but not sure what to do. The issue is
more than what the users do not know but what is considered
appropriate technology usage.

Digital Access

This refers to Digital exclusion makes it difficult to grow as a society

increasingly using these tools.

Helping to provide and expand access to technology should be goal of

all digital citizens. There are some that may have limited access, so
other resources may need to be provided. To become productive
citizens

Digital Commerce

a large share of market economy is being done electronically.

Legitimate and legal exchanges are occurring, but the buyer or seller
needs to be aware of the issues associated with it.

Users need to learn about how to be effective consumers in a new

digital economy.

Digital Communication

So Now everyone has the opportunity

to communicate and collaborate with
anyone from anywhere and anytime.

The expanding digital communication

options have changed everything
because people are able to keep in
constant communication with anyone
else.

Digital communication is important

because it make it easier for us people
to communicate everywhere and
anytime with people

Digital Literacy

This stage focus on process of teaching and learning about technology

and the use of technology. A renewed focus must be made on what
technologies must be taught as well as how it should be used.

In addition, workers in many different occupations need immediate

information (just-in-time information). This process requires
sophisticated searching and processing skills (i.e., information literacy

Digital Etiquette

This refers to electronic standards of conduct or procedure

It is the most pressing problems when dealing with Digital Citizenship.

such as inappropriate behaviour when we see it, but before people use
technology they do not learn digital etiquette (i.e., appropriate
conduct). Many people feel uncomfortable talking to others about
their digital etiquette. we must teach everyone to become responsible
digital citizens in this new society.

Digital Law

This refers to electronic responsibility for

actions and deeds

Digital law deals with the ethics of technology

within a society. Unethical use manifests itself
in form of theft or crime. Ethical use manifests
itself in the form of abiding by the laws of
society.

Users need to understand that stealing or

causing damage to other peoples work,
identity, or property online is a crime

There are certain rules of society that users

need to be aware in a ethical society. These
laws apply to anyone who works or plays online.

Digital Rights & Responsibilities

. Digital citizens have the right to privacy, free speech, etc. Basic digital
rights must be addressed, discussed, and understood in the digital
world

Users must help define how the technology is to be used in an

appropriate manner. In a digital society these two areas must work
together for everyone to be productive.

Digital Health & Wellness

. Eye safety, repetitive stress syndrome, and sound ergonomic practices

are issues that need to be addressed in a new technological world.

Users need to be taught that there are inherent dangers of technology.

Digital Citizenship includes a culture where technology users are taught

how to protect themselves through education and training.

Digital Security (self-protection)

We need to have virus protection, backups of data, and surge control of

our equipment.

As responsible citizens, we must protect our information from outside

forces that might cause disruption or harm.

THE FIVE FLUENCIES

MEDIA FLUENCY

which involved listening ,Learning to listen to a message, verbalise the

message, and then verify the message is the basis of being able to
produce the message using the most applicable form: the medium.

COLLABORATION FLUENCY

Which require communication

Therefore it is beneficial to have knowledge of the different platforms

that can be used in collaborating with people in different geographic
areas

Using WhatsApp and SMS are great for short messages that you may
want to send to a team, whereas extensive collaborative-type projects
might require VoIP-type applications such as Skype. Wikis are great for
brainstorming, allowing others to insert their ideas or to fine-tune those
ideas that have already been put forward.

Emails are good if you are sending out instructions or guidelines,

whereas Dropbox and Google Docs are great for sharing of files.

CREATIVE FLUENCY

It include some many different types such as:-

VisualSpatial: These people are good at solving puzzles, love reading,

are good with directions and map/ chart work, enjoy drawing and
painting and recognise patterns easily.

LogicalMathematical: which include people who are good at analysing

problems and mathematical operations. They enjoy thinking about
abstract ideas, conducting scientific experiments and working with
complex computations.

SOLUTION FLUENCY

What gives a problem solver the edge they need

The ability to define the problem and see it clearly

Thinking critically from multiple perspectives and visualizing

possibilities

The drive to create and deliver a solution and conquer any challenge

Its all of the above. And its what Solution Fluency is all about.

INFORMATION FLUENCY

is the ability to find, evaluate and use digital information effectively,

efficiently and ethically.

it involves knowing how digital information is different from print

information; having the skills to use specialized tools for finding digital
information; and developing the dispositions needed in the digital
information environment.

As teachers and librarians develop these skills and teach them to

students, students will become better equipped to achieve their
information needs
