 Sound the general emergency alarm, Activate shipboard emergency response plan
 Call master and inform Engine room
 Stop the ship or manoeuvre so as to minimise effects of collision
 Close watertight doors and automatic fire doors
 Switch on deck lighting at night
 Switch VHF to Channel 16 and, if appropriate, to Channel 13
 Muster passengers, if carried, at emergency stations
Make ship’s position available to radio room / GMDSS station, satellite terminal and other
 automatic distress transmitters and update as necessary
 Sound bilges and tanks after collision
 Chief Engineer/Duty Engineer informed and requested inspection of machinery condition.
 Check for fire / damage
 Offer assistance to other ship
Broadcast DISTRESS ALERT and MESSAGE if the ship is in grave and imminent danger and
 immediate assistance is required, otherwise broadcast an URGENCY message to ships in the
vicinity
 If oil spill occurs, follow SOPEP/SMPEP/VRP
 Assess / minimise pollution damage.
 Company / Ship Emergency Response Plan activated?
 Check stability / damage stability
 Check draught fore and aft, list and trim
 Check steering gear condition
 Mark course recorder and engine room data logger with time of collision
 Establish and mark position of collision
 Estimate and record angles of impact
 Note course and speed at time of impact
Record details of other vessel (name/flag/call sign etc.) and any causalities or damage to her
 hull or machinery
 Monitor weather forecasts
 Consider jack up possibility
 Collision notice sent to other vessel
 Establish distance to nearest port of refuge if required
 Ensure VDR is stopped within 3 hours from incident (if applicable)
