 On receipt of distress or urgency call, fix own position, calculate distance and time to point of
incidence
 Call master
 Re-transmit distress message
 Maintain continuous listening watch on all distress frequencies
 Inform company
 Consult IAMSAR manual VOL III
 Establish communications with all other surface units and SAR aircraft involved in the SAR
operation
 Notify person/authority co-ordinating operation that vessel is proceeding to the area
 Information about number of crew of distressed vessel or aircraft
 Nature of cargo of the distressed vessel and ascertain if it might hamper rescue operations or
create hazards
 Plot position, courses and speeds of other assisting units
 Monitor X-band radar for locating survival craft transponder (SART) signal using 6 or 12 nautical
mile range scales
 Post extra look-outs for sighting flares and other pyrotechnic signals
 Prepare rescue boat/crew
 Prepare ladders and net
 Prepare medical treatment of survivors
 Prepare log of events and deviation report
 Notify interested parties
